r----" Kentucky Derbys of Past-Charts and Future Books 1929 I j The 1929 Kentucky Derby furnished quite a paradox in that E. R. Bradley, the man who won four Derbys, failed to capture the famous race with, undoubtedly, the best horse he ever started in the Blue Grass classic. Blue Larkspur, opening future book choice, pre-post and actual starting favorite, was a "Bradley" horse which did not win the Derby. He opened at 7 to 1, with High Strung second choice at 8 to 1. Blue Larkspur went down steadily in the betting until he was quoted last at 2 1-2 to 1. Clyde Van Dusen on April 16 became the second choice and continued so into the race. He was the first son of Man o War to win the Derby and, strangely enough, he was about as large in stature as War Admiral, the last son of the great "Red" to win. Ervast was the forerunner of Indian Broom and other West Coast sensations that came East from California heralded as probable champions. He did not get to the post. The failure of Blue Larkspur to even place that year was blamed on the footing that day, much slop and mud prevailing. The field for the 1929 Derby numbered twenty-one, and among the unplaced besides Blue Larkspur, such other horses that became more or less famous later were Windy City, The Nut and Karl Eitel, as a glance over the following repro-. duction of the chart of the race shows: FIFTH RACE 1 1-4 MILES. Start e,ood and slow. Won easily; second and third driving. CLYDE VAN DUSEN took the lead after the first quarter, saved ground while setting the pace and responded to a light shaking up to the stretch to hold his opponents safe. NAISHAPUR, slow to start and racing wide, began moving up after going five eighths and, after being blocked in the stretch, where no swerved, finished with a rush when clear. PANCHIO was prominent for the entire race and, benefited by a strong ride, outfinished BLUE LARKSPUR. The latter ran well to the stretch turn, where he dropped back, but came again gamely after going to the inside in the stretch and just failed to get up for third place. WINDY CITY raced well and held on gamely. VOLTEAR tired in the final drive. BEN MACHREE finished with a rush. KARL EITEL tired. MINOTAUR was always far back. ESSARE showed early speed.
