TECHNICIAN XALAPA CLOWN Principal Members of Derby Colony Work Out at Churchill Downs. Woolford Farm Colt Sent Six Furlongs, and Xalapa Clown Breezes One Mile Steel Heels in Snappy Trial. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 13. Technician and Xalapa Clown, two of the principal members of the Kentucky Derby colony at Churchill Downs, passed another marker in their preparation for the 0,000 added special to be run here at a mile and a quartet on May 6 when they engaged in brisk training moves over a good track here this morning. Neither did anything of a sensational order, in fact both might have improved upon their performances, but their trainers, Ben A. Jones, who directs the conditioning of Technician, and Allie C. Dettwiler, Xalapa Clowns mentor, expressed themselves as satisfied with their Derby hopefuls and are confident they will be at the peak of their form when Derby Day rolls around. Xalapa Clown, which represents the Derby hopes of Mrs. Bessie Franzheim, traveled the farthest this morning, being sent a mile around the main course while Technician, the Kansas-bred star of the Herbert M. Woolf stable, was limited to a trial of three-quarters. The Franzheim colt worked in company with Top Man, a three-year-old stablemate, and it may or may not be significant thai Xalapa Clown was unable to handle his rival. The two kept on even terms for three-quarters of the distance, which they covered in 1:16, but then Top Man began to inch his way in front of the Derby horse, still breezing. Top Man completed the mile in 1:44, while Xalapa Clown was under a vigorous hand ride by Harold Kidwell to round out the eight furlongs in 1:44, about a length behind his running mate. They went the first half mile in :50. SHOWS HIS SUPERIORITY. Technician worked in company with Beau Insco, another Woolf racer, and, after clearly showing his superiority over his running companion, was inclined to loaf. Technician, with Roland Dostie in the saddle, and Beau Insco raced head and head for a half mile, for which they were timed in :49, and then the latter began to drop back, being pulled up after five-eighths. After disposing of Beau Insco, Technician took little further interest in his work and seemed to loaf the rest of the way, covering the three-quarters in 1:16 with consummate ease and galloping out the seven furlongs in 1:31. Another three-year-old which is shaping up as a possible Derby contestant is Junius W. Bells Steel Heels. He indulged in a snappy five furlongs trial under the direction of trainer Frank P. Letellier. This son of Harry Baker, accompanied by Kenton Bar, stepped the distance in 1:03 in handy fashion, galloping out three-quarters in 1:18. Kenton Bar could not keep up with his more fashionable stablemate after a half-mile, which they traveled in :50 flat, and at the end of six furlongs he was about two lengths behind Steel Heels. Trainer Letellier said that Steel Heels will be asked to go a mile Sunday morning. Giles County, one of the more lightly regarded eligibles in the stable of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars, completed the mornings workouts as far as Derby horses were concerned, by breezing five furlongs with Banner Man in 1:07.
