j DAUBER OUT FOR MONTHS-1 ! FIRED IN BOTH FORELEGS j k 4 LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 22. Dauber, second in the Kentucky Derby last year and one of the outstanding three-year-olds of 1938, may not be expected to make a serious effort to resume racing before next winter. The son of Pennant, purchased late in his three-year-old season "from the Foxcatcher Farm of Delaware by E. E. Fogelson, of Dallas, was fired in both forelegs yesterday and, while he may fully recover from the treatment in less than two months, Robert McGarvey, trainer of the colt, does not intend to push his preparation for a return to competition before next fall. McGarvey fully believes that Dauber has a 50-50 chance to stand training and return to the brilliant form he displayed last year when, in addition to being second to Lawrin in the Derby, he captured the Preakness Stakes, in which the Derby winner did not participate, and also finished second in the Belmont Stakes and the Santa Anita Derby. Should McGarvey be successful in bringing back this fine racer, he will make a notable addition to the handicap division. Possible winter objectives would include the Widener Challenge Cup at Hialeah Park or the Santa Anita Handicap and other stakes at Santa Anita Park.
