GOLDMAN, away fast, shook off EPITAPH in the stretch, but was under extreme pressure to hold SPIT-TENIMAGE. The latter, saved for half a mile while racing prominently and, coming through a narrow opening on the inside on the stretch turn, was overtaking the winner. EPITAPH tired in the final eighth after showing good speed. TO THE RECUE, saved for three-eighths, finished gamely under pressure. GOLDEN FATE was unable to reach the leaders. JACK STING was sent up fast on the outside near the far turn and, disposing of BALL-O-FIRE and BLUE GROTTO, opened up a commanding advantage and was not seriously menaced thereafter. MAEBEAU went to the outside in the stretch and closed resolutely. GLENBROOM was close up throughout. STEEL KING closed a gap. The latter, restrained for three-quarters, came to the outside for the closing drive and finished with a rush in time to get up for a dead heat. TIME CLOCK went to the front with a rush when reaching the back stretch and was rated along under slight reserve, but tired during the closing strides., LONG BIT was prominent throughout. LADY GENIE moved up menacingly nearing the eighth post but was unable to close ground during the final stages. FOREIGN LEGION was never a serious threat. FLOSILDA tired during the final quarter.
