TECHNICIANSPRESTIGE Continued from first page. month, it is hard to find a horseman who does not believe that the Woolf horse will win next Saturday and again in the Derby Trial. Those who saw the colt in Florida are confident that he now is capable of a far more brilliant performance than his splendid effort in the Flamingo Stakes. Quite a few of them regard Technician as the most improving three-year-old of this time and this opinion also is held by trainer Jones. Since arriving here, Technician has displayed considerably more speed than at any previous time and has sustained it with obvious ease, while several months ago he was one of the most sluggish horses in the Woolf stable of more than thirty head. Then, too, Technician now eats more than at any time in his life, a positive indication that he is thriving and not upset or distressed by the stiff work asked of him as Jones tightens him for the Derby grind. DERBY TRIAL OUTLOOK. While naturally, because of his preparation for a much longer objective, Technician will be at a disadvantage over the six furlongs of the Daniel Boone Purse here Saturday, the first day of the Downs meeting, his capacity should be revealed by his performance in the mile Derby Trial. Being an open race, it is difficult to determine what horses the Woolf colt will encounter in that engagement, but some of those which might start in the dash are Xalapa Clown, Steel Heels, Decatur, Sports Writer, Giles County, Lightspur, Burgoo Miss, Montsin, Flying Lill and others. Technicians company in the Derby Trial may include Porters Mite and Ariel Toy. two Derby candidates expected to come west: early next week, and also Xalapa Clown, American Byrd, Viscounty, Easy Mon, Steel Heels, Lostagal, No Competition, On Loca tion, Timeful, Syracuse, Yale o Nine, Cal exico, Giles County and Lightspur. Trainer Jones is taking every precaution to have Technician at the peak of his condi tion by May 6 and has engaged jockey Ira Hanford, Omaha boy, to guide him in the Derby. Jones believes Hanfords riding style and knowledge of the horse make him the logical choice for the important assignment.
