FINAL STAKES AT KEENELAND Lafayette and Blue Grass Stakes Yet to Be Decided. Only Three More Days of Racing Remain at Lexington Course Downs Opening Next Saturday. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 22. Two stakes, the Lafayette, for two-year-olds, and the Blue Grass Stakes remain to be decided during the final three days of the Keeneland Park spring meeting. With no racing on Monday, the season will enter its final week on Tuesday and will come to a close on Thursday. Kentucky racing then will be resumed at Churchill Downs on Saturday. At the present time it appears there will be eight starters in the ,000 added Blue Grass Stakes, over one mile and a furlong, but the Lafayette Stakes, to be run on Wednesday, is expected to attract a big field from its sixty-one nominations. Those expected to oppose the Greentree Stable trio of Third Degree, Hash and Roll and Toss are Calexico, Atatime, Viscounty and probably Counterpoise and Heather Broom. The latter pair is now in New York and inasmuch as Heather Broom was made a supplementary nomination, Earl Sande is expected to send the son of The Porter here for his engagement. Sande saddled Fencing, winner of the 1937 renewal under Maxwell Howards colors, and since taking over the J. H. Whitney horses this year Sande has been very successful with them. THIRD DEGREES FINE RACE. Hash, Third Degree and Roll and Toss have won here, Third Degrees triumph being the one to attract the most attention. Although unsuccessful in his two starts here, Viscounty has many backers and many believe that under better handling he would have been victorious in his last essay. C. H. Clearys Calexico won one of his two starts at Keeneland and in his last race was third to Hash and Viscounty. In that engagement he was called upon to concede weight to his opponents, giving five pounds to Hash and four and one-half pounds to Viscounty. Bull Lea was the winner of the 1938 Blue Grass Stakes and he earned ,855 for Warren Wright. Fencings purse of ,975 was the biggest in the history of the stake, but in the event of eight starters Thursdays renewal will gross nearly 1,000. Second, third and fourth monies total S3. 500. Headley course are Ramases, Bobs Squad, Bay Carse, Madam Capet, Red Dock, Flying Mary, Lynn, Charitable, Downy Pillow, Rapid Way, Roman and Valdina Minx. Ramases, Roman, Downy Pillow, Rapid Way and Charitable are winners at Keeneland and appear to be the leaders of those that have entered local competition.
