TECHNICIAN S PRESTIGE i H. M. Woolfs Colt Hope of West in Sixty-Fifth Kentucky Derby. Son of Insco Expected By Admirers to Duplicate Success of Lawrin in Fine Condition. LOUISVILLE.Ky., April 22 Although the East appears to have the strongest hand collectively for the sixty-fifth Kentucky Derby, to be run at Churchill Downs here two weeks from today, it may be the West that will provide the post time favorite for the 0,000 prize for three-year-olds. The East has such probable starters as Johnstown, El Chico, Challedon, Ariel Toy and Impound, but the growing support for Technician is threatening to establish this Kansas City-owned colt the popular choice for the mile and a quarter classic. Technician, which carried the colors of Herbert M. Woolf to victory in the Flamingo Stakes at Hialeah Park last February, has been showing brilliant form in his private trials, both on fast and muddy tracks, and he has only to win a few more admirers uiruugu ins pre-ueruy penormances unaer colors to carry the bulk of public support with him to the post on May 6. The Woolf three-year-old, out to emulate the performance of Lawrin, the 1938 Derbv winner, provided by the same stable, is scheduled to start in two races before facing the crucial Derby test. Ben A. Jones, trainer of the son of Insco, plans to start him in a six furlongs race here next Saturday, and in the mile Derby Trial Stakes three days later. MAY RULE FAVORITE. Should this rugged, even-tempered bay colt account for these preliminary engagements in hollow fashion, there are few combinations of circumstances which could prevent Technicians parading to the Derby post the heaviest-supported horse of the field. Here at Churchill Downs, where Technician has been training for more than a Continued on thirty-fifth page. TECHNICIANSPRESTIGE Continued from first page. month, it is hard to find a horseman who does not believe that the Woolf horse will win next Saturday and again in the Derby Trial. Those who saw the colt in Florida are confident that he now is capable of a far ; more brilliant performance than his splendid effort in the Flamingo Stakes. Quite a few of them regard Technician as the most improving three-year-old of this time and this opinion also is held by trainer Jones. Since arriving here, Technician bas displayed considerably more speed than at any previous time and has sustained it with obvious ease, while several months ago he was one of the most sluggish horses in the Woolf stable of more than thirty head. Then, too, Technician now eats more than at any time in his life, a positive indication that he is thriving and not upset or distressed by the stiff work asked of him as Jones tightens him for the Derby grind. DERBY TRIAL OUTLOOK. While naturally, because of his preparation for a much longer objective, Technician will be at a disadvantage over the six furlongs of the Daniel Boone Purse here Saturday, the first day of the Downs meeting, his capacity should be revealed by his performance in the mile Derby Trial. Being an open race, it is difficult to determine what horses the Woolf colt will encounter in that engagement, but some of those which might start in the dash are Xalapa Clown, Steel Heels, Decatur, Sports Writer, Giles County, Lightspur, Burgoo Miss, Montsin, Flying Lill and others. Technicians company in the Derby Trial may include Porters Mite and Ariel Toy. two Derby candidates expected to come west early next week, and also Xalapa Clown, American Byrd, Viscounty, Easy Mon, Steel Heels, Lostagal, No Competition, On Loca tion, Timeful, Syracuse, Yale o Nine, Cal exico, Giles County and Lightspur. Trainer Jones is taking every precaution to have Technician at the peak of his condi tion by May 6 and has engaged jockey Ira Hanford, Omaha boy, to guide him in the Derby. Jones believes Hanfords riding style and knowledge of the horse make him the logical choice for the important assignment
