I MOUNT ROYAL TURF NOTES $ Trainer P. ODonnell shipped Transmac, Preen, Vinny Boy, Povel and Last Harvest to Bel Air, Md. Apprentice Eugene White, under contract to Lou Keller, arrived from Latonia, Ky. The lad rode his first winner at Pair Grounds, New Orleans, on January 13, 1938. Saturdays jumping affair at the Back River Jockey Club will be named the Wi V. Henderson Memorial Steeplechase Handicap. For years the late Mr. Henderson was well known as a breeder, owner and gentleman rider and was a strong advocate of races through the field. It was good luck one day and bad the next for W. Robinson, who has a modest string in training here. On Tuesday Robinson was presented with a prize of 00 by the Back River Jockey Club for winning an amateur selectors contest, then on Wednesday morning his filly Melva D. reared up and fell backwards while schooling, suffering a severely wrenched back. Under the supervision of starter Walter Richey, the Cattarinich Starting Gate has undergone a number of improvements and it is now more mobile than ever. Uncle Mitch has been added to the schooling list by starter Walter Richey. Richard A. Leigh is busily engaged al-loting stalls for the coming Connaught Park meeting in Ottawa. Jules Dugal, secretary of the P. Q. R. A., is back after a short visit to Connaught Park and reports the entire plant and racing strip itself is in splendid condition at the present time. R. T. Baker has taken over the jumper Don Brown to train for J. M. Monaghan. While saddling the horse Fareast in the paddock prior to the sixth race on Monday, Archie Cooper, in the employ of H. B. Kelly, crashed into the side of the stall and was taken to a local hospital where his condition is reported to be serious. The three horses T. W. Cochrane brought here from Chicago are Frank C, Pokeaway and the Canadian-bred Bald Crest. Jockey C. W. Smith departed for Toronto, where he will vacation until the Hamilton meeting gets under way. Trainer Phil Mecklenburg checked in from Fort Erie and registered Hittie, Lissom Lad, Damica, Cudhogan, Stonewood, Leo D. and Stentorian. In an effort to give less fortunate owners a chance to win a purse, secretary Leigh has fashioned the first race on Friday for three-year-olds and upward, the bona fide property of owners since June 23 the owners of which have not won a race in 1939. The extensive string recently arrived from .Fort Erie, which will carry the silks of J. G. Fair, throughput the remainder of the Quebec racing season, is made up of Mc-Mark, Tabmark, Troublemark, Ann Hanover, Sava Mark, Mcddlemark, Lorraine S Rural Shower, Sky Warrior, Mr. Peck No Trouble, Bunetta, Ida Regan. On Monday, closing day of the Back River Jockey Club meeting, the feature affair will be called the Catta Handicap in memory of the late Joseph Cattarinich, long the leading light in Quebec racing affairs. This will be the second of a scries of four races in honor of the Montreal sportsman and it is fashioned for the best sprinters quartered hereabouts at a distance of six furlongs. Mr .E. Simon, a gentleman rider, rode his first actual race in competition with nro-fessional jockeys when he piloted his own Lea Cliff in the steeplechase affair on Thursday. Jockey E. Sylvia was suspended for three days by starter W. Richey for disobedience at the post in the fourth race Wednesday. Jockey J. Dyer, who has a commanding lead on his fellow riders for the seasons leading honors, is suffering from a slight cold and remained inactive Thursday. Trainer I. Mascia is making arrangements to ship the Dominion Stable racers to the Hamilton Jockey Club. The establishment suffered a stroke of ill luck Wednesday evening when Saragossa died following an attack of shipping fever. Jockey E. Burns will accompany the shipment.
