SOUTH CHICAGO HANDICAP Opening-Day Feature at Washington Park Expected to Draw Star Field. Entries Close Today, and Such- Popular Sprinters as Silverette, Olney and Others Will Be Named. HOME WOOD, 111., July 27 The South Chicago Handicap, for three-year-olds and upwards, at six furlongs, will headline a splendid opening program at Washington Park, Monday, and since women will be the guests of the management, the track looks for a banner turnout The handicap, entries for which close tomorrow, is expected to attract a strong field, including such capable sprinters, as Silverette, Olney, Lightspur, Robert L., Kings Blue, Talked About, Dusky Prince and Dora May, among others. These horses are familiar to Chicago racing fans, and they represent a well-matched group. The race carries a ,500 purse. The opening feature will be a sort of pre-v view of those likely to come together in the ,500 added Chicago Handicap, also at six furlongs, which tops the first Saturdays program. Nominations for this latter event close on Saturday, and among them are likely to be some of the fleetest sprinters in the Middle West. SUPPLEMENTARY FEATURE. Besides the South Chicago Handicap, the inaugural card includes the mile Hammond Purse, a condition affair, for three-year-olds and upward, which also should attract a representative field. In addition, there will be six other events, to round out an eight-race program. Stables are arriving here with increased frequency, and by the beginning of next week every stall on the grounds is expected to be filled. Included in these stables are many horses of quality, a detail which augurs well for the many stakes to be staged during the thirty days of the local season. The racing strip is in excellent condition, having been dressed down since last year, and the morning hours find many thoroughbreds going through their preparations for the meeting.
