OHIO FANS APPROVE CHANGE Curtailment of Twilight Sport Meets With General Gratification. Ashtabula Purse Canceled and Second Race Split Small Fields Meet in Other Races. CLEVELAND, Ohio, July 27. The hard rains of yesterday not only prevented a large week-day crowd from being present at Thistle Down Park today, but left the racing strip in such condition that the feature race the Ashtabula Purse failed to withstand the barrage of scratches and it was necessary to call it off. .To take care of the race the original second race was divided and one division was run as the fifth. With the Ashtabula Purse off, the best field met in the Conneaut Purse, the fourth race. Pegging Away and Wacky Jack, the latter winner of his last two races, were the early choices, with Pehamis next in demand. There were only five under colors and their previous engagements indicated them to be at home over the heavy track. MANY PHONE CALLS. The announcement that twilight racing will be abandoned, Thursdays excepted, during the remainder of the meeting, appeared to have met with the hearty approval of local fans. All during the morning there were many telephone calls received at the general managers office voicing approval of the change. In Ohio, Wednesday afternoon l is a half-holiday and in spite of the unfavorable weather yesterday the crowd was one of i the largest and the mutuel handle the fourth j highest of the season. In addition to the Ashtabula Purse there were numerous withdrawals and, with the exception of the sixth race, small fields met j in the other contests. j Tomorrrows program is topped by the j WGAR Purse, an allowance affair for three-year-olds over six furlongs. Travel Agent, Time Please, Franks Boy and Matchup are slated to carry the top impost of 113 pounds each and they will be opposed by Domanio, Speed Ship, Alldena and Anxiety.
