TRACK DRIES OUT QUICEY Latonia Course Drenched by Torrential Rains Improves Fast. i Fairly Good-Sized Crowd Present, Though Not Comparing to the Bumper Mid-Week Assemblage. t LATONIA, Ky July 27. Despite the fact - that torrential rains descended on this area last night, the condition of the racing strip , for the presentation of this afternoons pro-; gram at Latonia was far better than had I been anticipated. With a strong breeze, and ! with the sun peeking through the clouds at , intervals, plus steady work from the time that the training period was concluded dur-! ing the morning, the racing strip was no worse than slow for the opening of the days . festivities. : Although the attendance did not measure : up to that of the mid-week assemble, which was by far the largest of the current meet-! ing, a fairly large and enthusiastic crowd. : was present to view the diversified program. The card was divided between sprinters and routers, the first four events being dashes, l while the concluding quartet of races were ; staged over the more popular longer dis-s tances, two at a mile and seventy yards and I a like number over a mile and a sixteenth. ! Two purse affairs graced the card, with l the Burnett Woods, an allowance contest for three-year-olds and upwards at a mile and seventy yards and offered as the sixth race of the day, serving as the principal attraction. This contest brought out a band of seven to match strides with R. L. Stivers ; six-year-old gelding, Absconder, a romping winner in his only start here this season, sharing the favoritism honors with Mrs. ; Cecil Gregorys Taken, also an easy victor ; in his last outing. 1 WELL BALANCED FEELD. The field was a well-balanced one, and ; much interest was attached to the presence of Temulac in the band, contesting for the honors on this occasion. The bay son of Sir Gallahad III. Marching Alone attained , j I prominence through the 6,000 purchase tag that was attached to him when Warren Wright, Chicago sportsman and breeder, led . him from yearling sales ring at Saratoga two years ago. In the other purse race offered, styled the , Shandon Farm Purse, eleven maiden two- year-old fillies travelled the five and a half , furlongs. The entry of Holton Bros, and J. D. Murphree, composed of Jo Mary and , Green Turban drew the bulk of the support on this occasion. Tomorrows main event is given over to . juveniles, and although only six are named . in the overnight entries for the Blue Springs Farm Purse, at five and a half furlongs, , a keenly contested duel looms. John Price . Jones Nicka jack was a romping winner in his last start, but was not opposed by the caliber of youngsters such as Charlotte , Dear, Miss Sonada, Dust Off, Pell Mell and Balover, which constitutes his rivals in the fifth race on the card. The years of continuous campaigning seem to make no difference to the eleven-year-old gelding, Hamburger Jim, which accounted for his third victory of the year when he defeated Say When in the opening race, a dash of six furlongs, which brought together a band of nine platers. Happy Tid-ings, the early pacemaker, was easily the best of the others, though a tiring third.
