JOHNSTOWN IS TOP SPRINTER Three -Year-Old Rated Better Than Stablemate, Fighting Fox. Campbell Assigns Older Horse 128 Pounds and Johnstown 126 Pounds in American Legion Handicap, to be Run Monday. NEW YORK, N. Y.,-July 27. His new track record times for the five and three-quarter in the Fleet Wing Handicap and seven furlongs in the Carter Handicap still doesnt make the Belair Studs Fighting Fox as good a sprinter as the same establishments Johnstown. Not in the opinion of John B. Campbell. Since Campbell is the racing secretary and handicapper on all of New York major tracks, his ideas must be considered important. A line on this professionals estimation of the two horses was furnished by his weights for the ,000 added American Legion Handicap at seven furlongs, which were released late today at Empire City. This stake will be co-feature with the Flash Stakes for two-year-olds on the program opening the Saratoga Associations meeting on Monday. Fighting Fox, full brother to the great Gallant Fox and winner in his most recent outing of the 0,000 Massachusetts Handicap, tops Campbells weight list for the American Legion Handicap with an impost of 128 pounds. This is two pounds under the scale for four-year-olds and upward. FOUR OVER SCALE. Next on the list so far as actual weight is concerned is Johnstown, champion of the three-year-olds, with 126 pounds. Since this weight is four pounds over the scale for horses of his age, it is apparent that Campbell regards the son of Jamestown and La France, by Sir Gallahad HI., as a six-pound better horse than Fighting Fox. Whether either of the Belair Stud stars will start in the American Legion EVndicap could not be ascertained up to the close of racing yesterday at Empire City. Trainer Jas. Fitzsimmons said he had planned on starting Johnstown, but, since that fellow met defeat last Saturday in the Arlington Classic and since he has had so little time since then to race, he very probably will pass up the race. "Mr. Fitz" is skipping the Yonkers Handicap this Saturday with Fighting Fox, so there is a chance the older horse will fulfill the opening day engagement at Saratoga Springs. Campbell was a busy man today. In addition to releasing the weights for the opening days handicap he published those for the ,500 added mile and a quarter Saratoga Handicap, which is to be renewed on Saturday of next week. Topping this list is the retired War Admiral with 130 pounds. Next in line is the imported horse Kayak n., with 128 pounds. BEAT CRAVAT. It was only last Saturday that Kayak II., from Argentina, whipped Cravat, believed generally to be the Easts leading handicap performer. Whether he will be at Saratoga in time for the Saratoga Handicap is something that nobody at Empire City knew yesterday. Cravat is not eligible for this race. He is eligible at Saratoga for only one event the Saratoga Cup. Bull Lea, on the sidelines because of a bowed tendon, is the third high weight for the Saratoga Handicap, with 124 pounds. Then come Fighting Fox and Main Man, each with 118 pounds. Many horsemen were somewhat surprised that Fighting Fox, in view of his recent score in the rich Massachusetts Handicap, should have been assigned eight pounds under the scale. This makes him shape up in Campbells opinion as ten pounds inferior to Kayak II. Still, the general reaction to the weight announcement was that the track handicapper was "just about right."
