JANINA, in closest attendance to BULLISH after a quarter mile, came to the inside for the drive and under good handling was up in the final strides to outgame the latter. BULLISH held "a slight lead when settled for the stretch run, faltered during the late stages, but had enough left to be best of the others. GRUMPITO made up some ground when hard ridden through the stretch. FLOATING CLOWN* was forced to take the overland route when making his belated bid. LITTLE CAPTAIN lacked a rally. SWIRLING was, unhurried when outrun early, gained hrs best stride entering the stretch, disposed of PLUCKY PRINCE and won drawing away. The latter raced ATOMIC ENERGY into defeat to take command in the stretch, then tired. PHIDIAS closed resolutely in a sharp effort. ELKHORN was between horses throughout. MERRIEST was unable to keep up. ATOMIC ENERGY was much used early and had nothing left for the drive. SMART EVE raced wide. SULTANPEPPER quit. SUN DOMINO began tardily and lost all chance.
