Upsurge in Race Track Attendances on Holiday There was a marked upsurge in race track attendances the past Memorial Day over the same holiday a year ago, and with fewer courses in operation. At 12 turf centers Wednesday, a total of 345,886 fans filed through the gates as against 318,411 at 15 tracks in 1950. Pari-mutuel wagering also was up, 5,853,279 against 2,620,597. Following are the attendance figures this year: Track. Gate. Belmont Park 53,824 Beulah Park * *11,000 Delaware Park 27,698 Detroit . . . 28,063 Fairmount Park 10,682 Garden State 34,301 Hollywood Park 58,512 Lincoln Fields 36,407 Omaha . . 14,955 River Downs . . . *16,000 Suffolk Downs 30,254 Waterford Park 24,190 ♦Estimated. Increases were recorded at all the above except Garden State Park and Ak-Sar-Ben at Omaha. At the New Jersey track, the decline was 1,200 and at Omaha 768. The Lincoln Fields meeting at Washington Park and Delaware Park showed the greatest gains, more than 5,000 each. Belmont Park and Suffolk Downs were up -approximately 2,000 each, while at Detroit the increase was about 3,000. Across the border an estimated 7,500 were present at Woodbine Park in Toronto, and 4,000 at Blue Bonnets, Montreal. Holiday attendances in the two major leagues totaled 236,854, a decline •f 47,476 from 195t.
