JUDGES STAND *y charles hatton DETROIT, Mich., May 31.— The development of the new crop of two-year-olds is one of the fascinations of the sport, and the first five months of the season has turned up an unusual number of unusually quick colts and fillies, though we cant be sure as vpf. if t.hpv nlsn havp. class. TTpr* at. Detroit the ,300 Lonoke Flash, who-broke a track record in his first venture at Oaklawn, set a four and a half furlong mark of :53% in front of Red Romeo, who had finished third in Garden State Parks William Penn Stakes. The Terrell Brothers homebred, Tis Joe, reduced this to a flat :53 a few. races late. Back at the Downs, Red Curtice was within a fifth of the five-furlong mark of :58% in winning the Bashford Manor. Indeed, a filly called Miss Jato, running to be claimed for ,000, was credited with equaling that record, but it is said the flagman erred. The Pimpernel, one of the first crop by Pavot, set a new world straight course mark of :49% for four and a half furlongs at Belmont Park, where another of this sires progeny, Cigar Maid, won the Fashion. The ,000 Errards Guide hasnt broken any records, but he was winning his fourth race in five starts when he showered 13 others with five furlongs of slop in the Joliet Stakes at Lincoln-at-Washington. President E. E.-Dale Shaffer of the Michigan Racing Association bred Lonoke Flash, who is a first foal, a bit on the small side, and is named - for a town in Arkansas rice plantation country. After the race he observed, "I have heard it said that two-yeair-old races are not popular with players, but that was the smallest field of the day, numbering five starters, and it came near bringing the largest handle, one of 0,859." Incidentally, Lonoke Flash is another phenothiazine horse, and his bloodlines are pure in the sense they are free from worms as well as being acceptable to The Jockey Club. Ninety per cent of horses autopsied at the University of Kentucky die of worms of one kind or another. It is a moot point if phenothiazine raises or lowers the red corpuscle count while destroying the horse termites. The Detroit track is 19 miles from midtown Detroit and the new 3:45 first post on week days seems to work out satisfactorily, as it enables many factory workers, doctors, lawyers and others to attend. The interval between races has been foreshortened to about 21 to 23 Two-Y ear-Olds Breaking Time Records Late First Post Aids Detroit Racing Breeding Theory Like Chicken and Egg Delaware Solves Licensing Problem minutes. An estimated 80 per cent of the "tote" action here and at Lincoln-at-Washington comes after the post, parade gets under way, it doesnt seem to matter how much time there is between races. Detroit track operators do not share the dim view of television prevalent among track heads in some other areas, and this medium, radio and the press have been instrumental in stimulating interest. Not to mention the merchants cooperation in employing a racing theme in window displays. When the John Lodge and Edsel Ford highways are completed, motorists may reach the MRA course in about half the time now required. AAA This corner was interested in John A. Bell, Jr.s, remarks in Nelson Dunstans space concerning the inbreeding of Domino, who was the most influential U. S. sire of the last 50 years. Bell has experimented with inbreeding, both in horses and cattle, and Battlefield is a noteworthy result. Discussions of inbreeding and out-crossing are a little like the question of whether the chicken preceded the egg and usually as futile. -We like John Bell ,in.s definition that inbreeding is "a perpetuation of the characteristics of the multiple ancestor, not an intensification, as some misconstrue the term doubling up to mean." When Domino was retired, J. R, Keene wrote Major Daingerfield, protesting against the plan of breed-irig his highly-bred English mares to Domino, whom he seemed to consider underbred. It was from a mare of Australian blood that Commando was produced. And it was through Commando that "Domino exerted his tremendous influence on our bloodstock. Thus we are back to the chicken and the egg. This reference to Domino reminds that recently it was our pleasure to see some of P. A. B. Wideners cherished photos of "The Black Whirlwind" in action against Henry of Navarre and others of the Gay Nineties* These priceless shots show him to be a horse very like his descendant Blaek Toney and that sires splendid son, Capt. Hal, whom Roscoe Goose used to race in the Midwest. Bell is correct that inbreeding is far from a new-wrinkle, though it is in some vogue at present, but he is making interesting experiments in in breeding through new channels. It is difficult to avoid inbreeding at some farms, particularly in isolated areas. In fact, during the latter years of his life, Col. E. R. Bradley found he had so much Black Toney blood at Idle Hour he inbred to that horse with varying degrees of success. Delaware Parks meet is operating under rather peculiar circumstances this summer. As you may know, the horsemen and riders at past meets were licensed by The Jockey Club, which this year was relieved of that function by a special decree transferring it to the New York Commission. The Delaware Steeplechase and Race Association solved the problem by announcing that "No licenses are required, but: Owners, trainers, assistant trainers, jockeys, apprentice jockeys must obtain authori-zationfrom the Delaware Steeplechase and Race Association before they can participate in racing at Delaware Park." So far as we know, this is the first time an association has undertaken what amounts to licensing, except at amateur meets. The DSRA charges no fee for this "authorization." As in the past, jockey agents, stable agents and sub-agents,. racing permits for horses, registration of horses, partnerships and assumed names, and agreements with jockeys and apprentices are handled by The Jockey Club. Its something to think about when commissioners become specious about a delegation of power in connection with a Board of Review. AAA Turf ana: Calumets 1951 crop of foals comprises 24 colts, 15 fillies. Two colfe and a filly have been sold. Among those retained is a Goya n. colt who is a half-brother of Sun Again and Fervent. . .Coldstream has a brother to Lonoke Flash. . .Stuyvesant Peabody of the Illinois Board has announced a new rule which requires tracks to keep a complete record of all incoming and outgoing phone calls during racing hours. . .Several columns ago we had a paragraph about Break of Day, the Charles Town performer who was runner-up in the Black Eyed Susan. Mrs. Joseph Walker, Jr., of the Rolling Plains Stable, Unionville, Pa., kindly writes us that Break of Day is the first foal of Dairy Lady, a winning daughter of the C. C. A. Oaks winner, Lady Reigh. Dairy Lady now has a yearling Case Ace filly, a Pavot weanling, was bred to Devil Diver. Unable to buy Ocean Brief, Coldstream purchased her dam in foal to Roman, and E. E. Dale Shaffer tells us he now has a likeable sister to the King Ranch sprinter.
