Gene Long Again Vies With Jerry A. Hanover Former Ended Rivals Five-Race Win Streak in Last Encounter AURORA DOWNS, Aurora, HI., May 31. — Gene Long, the horse responsible for snapping Jerry A. Hanovers five-race win skein, gets a chance to prove it wasnt just racing luck when the pair meet again in a two-trip free-for-all trot at Aurora Downs Friday night. The nine-year-old McEUen bay gelding, owned by V. Spencer, Belvidere, HI., came roaring down the stretch in the second dash of their duel on May 23 and won the heat in 2:08 Jerry A. Hanover, leaving from an outside post position, had to be content with third. The heat prior to this, however, Jerry Aw Hanover set a blistering pace to rack up his fifth in a row in the excellent time of 2:06%. Friday night Jerry A. Hanover will get a real test against the fast-class trotters. The seven-year-old Spud Hanover bay gelding, owned by H. W. Burright, Springfield, HI., drew seventh post position for both mile trips. n Buddy Patchen, Denny Moores in-and-out campaigner, grabbed the coveted pole for the first mile while Gene Long starts from the No. 1 spot in the nightcap. Moses, Glenn Barkers very popular trotter, will make his third start of the season in the free-ifor-all event. Coupled with Fay Spencer as the Barker Stable entry, Moses drew 2-8 for the trot. Rounding out the top field of trotfers is Fay Scott, Joe Donlin and Pay Up. Any one of these trotters is capable of coming up with terrific miles to whip the logical favorites, Jerry A. Hanover and Gene Long. The Great Mid-West Trot, a ,100 early closing stake event for three-year-old trot-tefs, attracted seven juveniles and will be raced starting at 6 p. m. with no pari-mutuel betting. The Osborne Stable entered a pair, Leon Dewey and Leona Lass, with the rest of the field consisting of Pastime Marilyn, Terry D., Mi Crusader, Aragons Gale, Josedale Fairplay. The first trip will be over the mile route while the second heat is set for iys miles. If necessary, the third heat is set for 9-16 mile, and if a fourth heat is necessary, the distance will be one mile. The event is the counterpart of the ,30F Great Mid-West Pace, which attracted only four entries and also was staged prior to the regular nine-race pari-mutuel betting card.
