Rena Pop Lowers Detroit Track Mark in First Win Goes Five-Eighths in :59Vs to Whip Fancy Dream Decisively By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent DETROIT, Mich., June 18. — P. L. Gris-soms Rena Pop displayed marked improvement today over her previous local start, toying with seven two-year-old rivals in the first race while chalking up a new five-furlong track record in Confidently handled by Alfred Popara, Rena Pop was under a snug hold as she coasted to the finish of the juvenile dash with a three and one-half lengths advantage over James Paddocks favored Fancy Dream. The latter filly, ridden by Eldon Coffman, was an easy second before K. M. Littles Bold Bandit, three lengths separating, the pair at the wire while M. E. Reizens Penn-woven saved fourth money. Rena P op, making her second appearance under silks, carried 109 pounds in the record-smashing performance and she was second choice to* Fancy Dream, returning backers 2.40. The Grissom miss, foaled at her owners Duntreath farm, is a daughter of Easy Mon and Mesella. With delightful weather prevailing in the Motor City area, a crowd of 8,000 turned out for the sport, which was decided on a lightning fast track. Popara bided his time with the ultimate victress and when ready his mount quickly disposed of the early pacemaker and established a clear lead. Once settled in the stretch, Rena Top was snugged along and Fancy Dream was unable to threaten the former although much the best of the others. Seasoned observers pointed out that the Grissom filly probably would have clipped another fifth or so off the track mark had she been under any pressure during the late stages of the race. Marion H. VanBergs Equisun proved best of the eight ordinary platers meeting in the six-furlong second. Equisun, well ridden by Lois Cook, forged to the front during the drive, drawing out to a two and one-half lengths accounting. Cliff Hylands Time Eternal, pacemaker to the last eighth mile, finished on equal terms with McKinnon and Westphalls Myersdale for the place while Mrs. J. R. Burnetts Irrawaddy, choice for the sprint, salvaged fourth. Equisun returned 31 to 10 after completing his trip in 1:12%. The Daily Double pay-off on Equisun and Rena Pop was 0.00. The locally-owned Grissom stable, trained by Walter Susini, sent out its second winner of the afternoon when Scotch Jack earned a graduation victory in the six-furlong third race. Scotch Jack, weakly handled in his previous start by Willie Lee Johnson, was the recipient of a hustling ride from the same boy, driving to the final marker with a two-length margin over Mrs. E. Fens Mr. Tweety, the favorite, who had beaten Scotch Jack in their last meeting.
