= ► : Out Point Duplicates Sites Feat to Win Yankee Handicap Topweighted Alerted Unable To Give Lazy F Ranch Colt Sixteen Pounds at Suffolk By AYERY BROWN Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 18* — Out Point, a chestnut son of Shut Out— Briarhone, owned by Mrs. W. S. Farrish, of Houston, Texas, and Mrs. R. L. Gerry, of Westbury, L. I., who race under the nom de course of Lazy F Ranch, duplicated the feat of his sire back in 1942 and annexed the Yankee Hanflicap at Suf-■f oik: Downs today before a holiday gathering numbering 14,155. The New York invader, smartly ridden by the competent Hedley Woodhouse, came to the end of the mile and a quarter three lengths before Hampton Stables Alerted, While Ralph Lowes Blentigo finished third another length and a half back. Scoring only the second triumph of his career, Out Point earned ,450 as his share of the gross 1,575 added money in this sixteenth running of the tpp three-year-old stake of the Massachusetts racing season. The winners time for the gruelling distance was 2:04 over a track which dried out enough throughout the afternoon to be termed "good." Held at third choice in the wagering, Out Point paid 1.40. The Yankee lost one of its starters this morning when Joe Gavegnanos Joey Boy wrapped himself during a blow-out and the ankle filled so quickly to cause the withdrawal. Pictus, the hope of Ralph Lowe in the event the track remained muddy, was also a late scratch along with Murlpgg Farms Fighting Back._That left seven sophomores, including anentry for Lowe, Snorkel, beaten well off in the stake, was coupled- with Blentigo. Draws Clear Quickly Woodhouse sent Out Point into command .as Buddy Wingfield sent the field away from the chute at the head of the stretch. Immediately drawing clear, the capable rider moved over to the inner rail to save ground on the turn and then took a good hold of his mount as Alerted and Blentigo took up the chase. Blentigo gained the inside nearing the clubhouse turn and came out a neck before Alerted, before entering the back-stretch. Alerted, under a stout hold by Pete McLean, was content to allow the Lowe colt to establish a good pace under the conditions of the track. The leaders were never more than daylight apart as they wended their way to the three-eighths pole. At that point the real test began and as McLean called on Alerted Woodhouse did the same with the ultimate winner. The i move carried both past Blentigo and the i i battle was on. It wasnt until the furlong !. ___ marker was reached that Out Point forged to the front and from there to the end Woodhouse drove stoutly to gain his three-length margin. As it turned out, a difference of 16 pounds was too much for the Hampton Stable colt to concede to his rival. Alerted carried top weight of 124 pounds while the New Yorker was weighted at 108 pounds. The big disappointment of the Yankee was the performance turned in by Tommy Mays Whirling "Bat who was installed equal choice with Alerted. Closer "to the pace than in his other local aces, Whirling Bat appeared to have something bothering him when jockey Evan Jenkins asked for a move near the turn out of the back-stretch. The son of Whirlaway began to look for a place to get out on the extreme outside and throughout the final quarter mile, Jenkins had his work cut out trying to drive and avoid going all the way to the outer rail. None of the others in the Yankee were able to get close enough to the top three to cause a threat in the final half mile.
