Two Keeneland $ Sales This Fall Offer Yearlings at Vendue Opening Oct. 23; Breeding 5 Stock Session Begins Nov, 12 - By HUGH J. McGUIRE I f Staff Correspondent i LEXINGTON, Ky., June 18.— While the j! chief interest of the Breeders Sales Com- . pany is centered just now on the sale of C selected yearlings at Keeneland July 30 to 5 August 2, the executive committee of the * board" of directors is making plans for fall I sales which embrace yearlings, broodmares, [ weanlings, stallions and other horses. Be- cause a change from the usual pattern of -fall * racing dates at Churchill Downs this year finds a raceless gap "between the clos- c ing of Keeneland on Saturday, October 20, : and the opening of Churchill Downs on r Saturday, October 27, the closing day at -the Louisville course is set back until No- ■* vember 17. This necessitated .a change of -selling dates at the fall vendues at Keene- t land. The principal change will be that the sales company will hold two vendues this fall. The first will be confined to yearlings and will be held during the non-racing dates between the Keeneland and Churchill Downs meeting. It it scheduled to start on Tuesday, October 23, Monday of that week to be utilized for the removal of racing stables from Keeneland to make room for the sales entrants. There will be two sessions daily, afternoon and evening and William S. Evans, general manager of the sales company, is hopeful that the sales will be completed in four days totaling eight sessions. The number of entrants will determine if it is necessary to hold an additional session on Saturday morning. Last year nine sessions were required to dispose of 635 yearlings. No Yearlings at Second Sale No yearlings will be sold during the later sale of broodmares, stallions, weanlings* and horses in training which is-tentatively set to begin Monday, November 12. Here again afternoon and evening sessions will be held until completion and Evans esti-. mates that three ddys will be sufficient for this stock to go under the hammer, the same number of sessions required last year. There will be no morning sessions. Breeders are reminded that the deadline for entries and withdrawals from the fall sales is August 20 which conforms to the 60-day notice required by the contract with the sales company. Consignors will note that there is only one sale for yearlings this fall and horses of that age will not be sold at the later sale in November. This later sale will be operated during the Churchill Downs meeting, but it is felt that because it is confined to breeding stock it will not conflict with racing stables, most of which - are primarily concerned with yearlings. At the combined sales last year 1,168 horses were catalogued. A similar number is expected at the two fall sales this year.
