Schroeder, Virginias Ace Pass-Catcher, Joins Bears The Bears yesterday announced the signing of Gene Schroeder, speedy University of Virginia end who was one of the nations leading collegiate pass receivers. The Bears added, however, that the 22-year-old Schroeder is in the military reserve. A player who can run the 100-yard dash in 9.7 seconds, Schroeder caught 33 forward passes, good for 552 yards and seven touchdowns, last season at Virginia. He was the Bears first regular choice in the National Football League draft, not counting the first picks of other teams for which they had traded.
