Oh six Saturdays and the January 1 holiday, two stakes will be presented and midweek stakes will be run for the first time at Santa Anita. Racing director Carleton F. Burke, in outlining Santa Anitas new set-up, declared that the increased number of stakes offers more competition to the countrys leading horses and will result in a wider money distribution. He also explains that the program for the daily purses with a ,500 overnight feature, one purse at ,000, one at ,000, two at ,500, one at ,000 and two at ,500, will provide better facing and a more equitable reward for the " horses value and class. Names Carry Early Spanish Motif Rotable to the breeding industry in Santa Anitas new stakes in the age and sex classifications are eight fixtures scheduled for three-year-old fillies with four of them being open to mares. Important tests leading up to the three "hundred granders" are also added. The Los Angeles turf club has followed the pattern of its established turf fixtures by dedicating the 17 new Santa Anita stakes in memory of the old Spanish land grants, missions, pueblos and ranchos, which figured so prominently in Californias early history. The Washington Birthdays and San Luis Rey Stakes close February 16, while the deadline for the FitzGerald and San Juan Capistrano is March 1. The Santa Anita Handicap and Derby both will close on December 1.
