Almenow— Dear Tint Coupling Likely Favorite for Detroits Mackinaw Purse Traveler Has Speed to Give 1 G and G Stable Duo Battle at Every Stage of Sprint Test By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent DETROIT, Mich., June 12.— The Mackinaw Purse, three-quarters mile for four-year-olds and older, will occupy the spotlight tomorrow afternoon at this well-appointed Motor City racing grounds. Nine of the fleetest sprinters quartered at the local course are entered in the Friday feature, which shapes up as one of the top short distance events of the current Michigan season. The G. and G. Stables Almenow and the Detroit-owned Theodore D. Buhl representative, Bee Lee Tee, each will shoulder high weight burdens of 121 pounds under the Mackinaw allowances. Almenow is to have a useful running-mate in Dear Tint, who gets in with 110 pounds, and it is quite likely that the G. and G. Stable pair will go postward favored. Henry Forrests Traveler, Marion H. Van Bergs Miss Bobbin, and J. C. Montanas Ala Mowlee are other shifty racers entered in the dash. Trailer is to race under 116 ► pounds, provided he is handled by an apprentice reinsman; Miss Bobbin gets a similar package, and Ala Mowlee draws 119 pounds. John Gibson Farms Princess Dare, 107, Ralph Lowes Will You Dance, 105 and the Sobare Stables Air Flight, 114 pounds, completes the Mackinaw Purse overnight field. Traveler, seven-year-old gelded son of Golden Voyage and one of the stars of the Forrest-trained establishment, failed to race to his best form in two local appearances but he is expected to improve off his recent effort in which he finished third in the six furlongs Cadillac Square Purse. Traveler was a good winner during his 1951 campaign, registering six victories in 18 starts. Two of his top performances last season came about at Oaklawn Park at which course he set a new six furlongs track record of 1:10 and then equaled it just one week later. Almenow and Dear Tint certainly give the G. and G. Unit a strong hand for Mackinaw Purse major honors. Vester E. Wright, trainer for the Grissom and Gross-field-maintained stable, is enjoying unusually good success at the Detroit race Continued on Page Thirty-Five Almenow, Dear Tint Coupling To Meet Traveler at Detroit Continued from Page One course with his charges this season. Dear Tint, a four-year-old Tintagel-sired colt, ran second to Suffki in the recently decided Hamtramck Purse and he won five of 12 engagements during his three-year-old campaign. Almenow ran second, beaten a short margin by Forrest stables Pine Art on June 4 but, previous to his defeat, visited the local winners ring on two occasions. Tommy Barrow, leading rider at the present Detroit race course meet, will have the mount on either Dear Tint or Almenow, according to word this morning from trainer Wright. The popular G. and G. Stable conditioner is on even terms with William Zakoor for training honors here this season. Ala Mowlee, a four-year-old gelding, the get of Alaking and Nell Mowlee, displayed good speed in the Cadillac Square Purse, finishing fourth to Wisenheimer, Badger and Traveler. The Montana Stable entrant is a consistent racer and his eight triumphs in 1951 were achieved against fast company while his two victorious trips this year also are such that he must be accorded a good chance in the Mackinaw. Will You Dance, Air Flight, Bee Lee Tee and Miss Bobbin have displayed occasional flashes of class during their local campaigns but each would have to show marked improvement to upset the Mackinaw Purse early choices. Princess Dare, a five-year-old daughter of Jacomar and Darling Lady, has been away from the races since April 9, 1951. Before her long lay-up, the Detroit-pwned mare was beaten in three starts hurt year but she won an allowance race at Washington Park during her 1950 campaign. Princess Dares morning trials of late have been on the quick side. While the Mackinaw Purse is attracting the most attention here, the five furlongs first race, which will match a full field of two-year-olds, undoubtedly will develop into quite an interesting juvenile number. Included in the list of 15 entrants are Mrs. E. E. Dale Shaffers speedy colt, Piddle, third in the Joliet Stakes; T. M. Girdlers Fastener, Mrs. George Krehbiels homebred colt, Golden Gem, and Hi-John Stables Battle King, among others. The Mackinaw Purse and its splendid supporting card probably will be contested over a fast track. Although light clouds hovered over the local course late today, temperatures were such that there was no decided threat of rainfall.
