Candidate, Wild Peter Meet at River Downs Each Is Striving for His Third In Row; Six Others Also Entered R. E. HURLEY Staff Correspondent RIVER DOWNS, California, Ohio, June 12. — Driving rains which turned the racing strip into a quagmire failed to dampen the horsemens entry enthusiasm as full fields were named for tomorrows program. An ,100 condition race at six furlongs earned the title the Walter C. Doll Purse, he being a local insurance executive who has long been a thoroughbred racing fan. Eight four-year-olds and upward have been named overnight to vie for the honors including a pair of five-year-old geldings who are seeking their third straight victory. These are E. C. Buntings Candidate and E. G. Mahoneys Wild Peter. They will be opposed by W. E. Harneds Jungle Fire, Beezley and Scotts Nebraska Cash, L. W. Johnsons Little Buck, W. R. Painters Neverlator, R. W. McDonnells Caldwell and D. and C. Terrells Shogoin. The last mentioned is the only filly in the cast. Wild Peter and Candidate are the outstanding members of this field and should attract the most public support. The Bunting gelding is a two-time winner at River Downs and is best suited by the conditions of the race. The former Woolford Farm runner may be hampered by an "off" track for he has a tricky pair of legs and may elect to wait for firmer footing. Wild Peter, also a winner of his initial River Downs effort following a victory at Beulah, will have to correct his habit of running wide if he expects to be home first tomorrow for the opposition is much tougher than his last in which he went very wide. The Petrose geld-ifig should prefer a soft track, will argue with Candidate all the way. Shogoin will have the services of jockey J. Vitelli, who has been making a habit of winning these features and gets in with a feathery 100 ponuds. The Errard filly also should move up in mud and is expected to give a good account of herself. Little Buck, Jungle Fire and Neverlator are favored by the allowance conditions of 11 •..ill H .» i the race for they have been racing with slightly better horses than they meet to-, morrow. Anyone of this trio might come off the rapid pace and nail the verdict. Caldwell and Nebraska Cash both have changed hands since their last races and might prove a quick return on the investment. Both will have to improve drastically to do this. . i .•• • ■.
