Mobile Field Laboratory Is Used by Veterinarian Dr. George Palmers Trailer Is Equipped With All Latest Devices DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 12. — Another first here is the mobile field laboratory of veterinarian George Palmer, whose large trailer is equipped with every new device known to the practice, Including an X-ray machine, photoelectric analyzer and a new sterilizing machine, which is such a late model that the patent is still pending. In addition, the trailer houses two bunks, a lavatory and shower. The advantage of such an experiment — and it still is such, being put into use only last week at the start of this meeting — is the rapidity with which work can be completed. Dr. Palmer, who. incidentally, is a son of the starter at this track, had the idea in mind for some time before it took concrete form. Formerly samples of blood, for example, would have to be sent to a lab and no result would be available for as long a period as three weeks. With the mobile laboratory and its equipment, the results can be determined in anywhere from a couple of hours to two days, depending on the nature of the research. Aiding Dr. Palmer is Tony Galluzzo, a registered medical technician, who makes most of the tests. This morning a concrete example was afforded of the practicality of the mobile lab. The vet had been treating a filly for the past week and had just taken a blood sample. Within a matter of a few hours it will be determined whether she is suffering from a virus or a different type of infection. Formerly, such a result would not be available for weeks. While this is the first such trailer lab, Dr. Palmer would not speculate as to whether other veterinarians would adopt the same setup. Horsemen will see it next at Atlantic City, where Palmer and Galluzzo will go following this meeting.
