i [ ! I i Top Trio in Gwathmey Eye Delaware Stakes The Mast, Oedipus, Navy Gun in • Georgetown, Indian River Chases ; DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June J 12. — Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs The Mast, , Mrs. Ogden Phipps Oedipus and Louis W. Jennings Navy Gun, who monopolized the ; money positions in yesterdays Temple ! Gwathmey Steeplechase Handicap at Belmont . Park, are eligible for both the , [ Georgetown and Indian River Steeplechase ; Handicaps at Delaware Park. The same I can be said of James F. McHughs Jam, , Montpeliers Hampton Roads and Rokeby r Stables American Way, who finished in the order named behind the top three. The Mast, an Annapolis gelding, won the - Tom Roby at this track last year, but will 1 be making his first appearance over the i gruelling stakes course, the jumps of which t are much more difficult than those of the i regular course. Trainer Jim Ryans charge ! has, however, displayed excellent jumping I ability. Oedipus made his seasonal bow in the Temple Gwathmey and seems certain to i improve, though he has been very unsteady • over the local course in previous appearances. Navy Gun, prior to the T. G., - was a good winner of the Corinthian, while Jam accounted for the Charles L. Appleton Memorial. A notable absentee from this years i steeplechase competition will be the veteran Elkridge, who was retired earlier in the season. The aged Mate — Best by Test gelding, the worlds leading money winning steeplechaser, won the Georgetown in 1949 and 50 and captured runnings of „he Indian River in 1942, 45 48, 49 and 50. Tomorrows top offering on a rather dull card is the mile and one-sixteenth Wood-lawn Purse, styled for three-year-olds and upwards. Matching strides in this allowance affair will be the following: Blue Stone Farms Screaming Mimi, J. G. Lei-per, Jr.s Blue Jack, S. A. Weidmans Flag Request, Basil A. Halls Challa Rock, Al C. Pauls Surprising, Winlochan Stables The Slip, and Mrs. D. B. Millers Warup. Screaming Mimi was rather impressive in her recent maiden victory, coming from off the pace to beat non -winners of the ,500 claiming variety. She was timed in 1:47%. Blue Jack ran two races later at the same distance and in that event, the first Montchanin Handicap, was beaten off in 1:43%. Flag Request turned in her best race at Pimlico, where she was narrowly beaten by G. R. Petersen while finishing in front of Brookmeades Suggested. Surprising drops down a bit after having been badly beaten by Star of Persia and other fairly classy colts in an allowance event.
