Y., June 12.— George Araujo, New Englands young lightweight contender, will get his most severe test tomorrow night in a television 10-rounder with Canadian Arthur King at Madison Square Garden. King, of Toronto, champion of the British Empire, is a dangerous opponent. Only three weeks ago he won a unanimous decision over Brooklyns Paddy DeMarco after flooring him twice. DeMarco had been rated top contender for the world title. Nevertheless, 21 - year - old Araujo of Providence, R. I., was favored at 11-5 today because 1 he is a whirlwind boxer-puncher who may outspeed King, and 2 his impressive record comprises 43 victories and 29 knockouts in 44 professional bouts. He dropped but one decision three years ago. Tomorrow nights winner may get a title shot at the winner of the proposed return title bout between champion Lauro Salas and ex-champ James Carter at the Garden, August 27. Because of that significance, j both Negroes will be shooting the works in tomorrow nights bout. After 31st Consecutive Victory Araujo, making his Garden debut, will be seeking his thirty-first consecutive victory. He hasnt been beaten since his only defeat by one Doc Blanchard at Worcester. Mass., on September 14, 1949. Less than six weeks later, Georgie knocked out Blanchard in the eighth round of their return bout. He won five bouts this year. Araujo s record includes victories over Sandy Saddler, Fabela Chavez, Harry La-j sane, Charley Riley and Del Flanagan. However, some boxing men consider his record somewhat deceptive. They empha-sive that the only good lightweight on his list was Del Flanagan of St. Paul. Georgie outpointed Del last November 5. Araujo did practically all of his previous fighting in New England. His only previous New York bout resulted in a knockout over Charley Riley at St. Nicholas Arena, on April 4 Meanwhile, 25-year-old King has had 60 pro bouts. He won 52, including 18 knockouts. He lost eight, including a technical kayo by Joe Miceli in January, 1951. The speedy Canadian won the British Empire 135-pound title by knocking out Billy Thompson of England, at Manchester, England, on October 1, 1948. He gave up the title temporarily in 1950 to compete with welterweights. No one else replaced him as champ. Accordingly, he declaimed the title this year when he decided to concentrate on the lightweight division and to campaign for the world crown. King has been regarded as an "in-and-outer" because of his eight defeats. Among his four bouts this year was a defeat by Del Flanagan. Two of his 1952 scraps were with Fitzie Pruden, whom he outpointed and knocked out. His last engagement resulted in his great upset triumph over DeMarco.
