■ft "Jsai I Fracas Leads Montadet in Tom Roby BEVERLEY BROUN— The West Virginia sportsmans colors were carried to victory by Lancaster Lady in yesterdays Idle Miss Purse at Aqueduct. Dubassoff-Trained Pair Run One-Two French-Bred Registers by Seven in Fourth Start in U.S.; Faberose Successful By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 12. — Evander B. Schleys Fracas and John M. Schiffs Montadet, racing coupled as trainer Oleg T. Dubassoffs entry, dominated this afternoons Tom Roby Steeplechase as they finished first and second, respectively, in front of Brookmeade Stables Flaming Comet. Backers of the entry had anxious moments, however, when Elwood Carter. Flaming Comets rider, claimed foul against Fracas, only to be overruled by the stewards. Fracas, a six-year-old French bred leaper, was making only his fourth start in this country and picked up a purse of ,700 after completing the 15-jump, about two-mile course in 3:51M , under Frank D. Adams. Success meant a return of 1.20 to backers of the winner in the crowd of about 12,000. Montadet, another who was bred in France, cut out the early pace for his stablemate, turned back repeated challenges, first by Gentle Star and then by Flaming Comet in the late stages. It was during this point of the race that Carter felt that Flaming Come.t had been bothered sufficiently to warrant disqualification of the winner. When Adams called on Fracas for speed in the late stages, the Schley colorbearer responded splendidly to move along the inside, take over command after the final fence and rapidly attain a steadily increasing lead. Hospitalized for Ten Years Tom Roby, for whom the race is named, is confined to the Mary Immaculate Hospital in Jamaica, where he has been since a spill from Knights Quest a decade ago. His two brothers, John and Lawrence, were among those present today, as was Fred Berzilius, a friend of the family. Bayard Sharp, a member of the board of directors at Delaware Park, and owner of Knights Quest at the time of Robys mishap, donated a trophy for the race, which was presented by Mrs. Sharp to Jockey Adams, rider of Fracas. Delawares governor, Elbert N. Carvel, was among those present to witness the fifth race, a Delaware Oaks prep run in his honor, and won by Foxcatcher Farms Rosemont filly, Faberose. Governor Carvel, following the running, presented a sterling silver cigarette box to William duPont, Jr., owner of the Foxcatcher establishment. Faberose, a slight favorite at .70, was accomplishing her second victory in a trio of engagements this year and was timed the six furlongs in 1:12, under Maurice "Moose" Peters. In her only other start she was a bang-up fourth behind Parading Lady in the Acorn Stakes. Behind Faberose this afternoon was George M. Humphreys Hummy, followed by Alan T. Clarkes Jeannie C. There was a real speed duel in the Carvel, with E. Barry Ryans Gun Moll and Jeannie C. racing on almost even terms into the stretch, where the last-named filly drove her head to the fore for the first time. She was unable to retain the advantage, however, as Faberose and Hummy drove by her, with the Foxcatcher miss out-finishing her nearest rival. The first four to finish in the Carvel are eligible for the Oaks, which will be renewed at the mile and a furlong distance on Saturday, June 21. Should these fillies fill their engagements, as they seem likely to do, they would be asked to match strides against such lassies as Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Lily White, Joe Browns Parading Lady, King Ranchs Sufie and Maine Chances Rose Jet.
