,- Promptness Scores Again at Suffolk Overtakes Crystal Pass to Register by Head in Upset; Keene Holds to Jockey Lead By FRED GALIANI Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 12. — R. E. Dutchers Promptness displayed plenty of that in the featured Waban Purse this afternoon and whipped C. L. DuPuys Crystal Pass by a head, after letting the choice set the early pace for the entire journey, then running him down in the stretch. A half length in back of the closely locked pair came Red Head Stables Platterette in the mile and a sixteenth race. Promptness was keeping his 1952 record clean, winning his second purse in as many starts. Those who wagered on Promptness chances were rewarded with 4.20 for every as the five-year -old covered the distance in 1:45 over the fast track. Harold Allgaier was astride the winner of the feature race. Earlier in the card Keene countered three winners to keep his lead over apprentice Anthony DeSpirito, who had registered in the first two races. A crowd of 8,803 fans turned out for the sport, which was conducted under clear, blue skies and should have come one day earlier, when the Massachusetts Handicap was decided. Crystal Pass Takes Lead Pederson went to the front immediately with Crystal Pass, while Saint Nicholas and Promptness were in close pursuit. All the way down the backstretch the, order remained the same. Rounding the turn, Promptness and Platterette made their bids and the three of them swung into the stretch only small margins apart. Crystal Pass was down on the rail and being goaded along under Pedersons left-handed whipping, while Promptness was slowly cutting into the winners margin in the run home. Platterette and Johns Choice were further out on the track as they whirled down the lane. Johns Choice soon dropped out of it and Platterette was unable to match speed with the leaders, leaving Promptness and Crystal Pass to fight it out. Despite . all the efforts of Pederson, the favorite was I not able to fend off the winners charge and had to be content with second money. Apprentice Anthony DeSpirito rode both ends of a Daily Double worth 5.60 here today on J. H. Carrs Water Kelpie and Palatine Stables Militant Lady to add two more winners to his ever-growing list. Water Kelpie closed fast on the outside in the opener to beat E. Siravos Fighting Hoop and pay 3.40 for the six furlongs in l:13y5. Jockey Joe Spinale was thrown when his mount stumbled nearing the far turn, but both he and the horse, Dixies Pal, escaped injury. Militant Lady ran a faster six panels in 1:12% to defeat D. Robertsons Annar in the second for the first victory for the Philadelphia -owned stables silks in their first day here. Their only other starter ran in the first race and finished third. Militant Lady was good for .20 in the straight wagering.
