Dodgers Beat Cubs in Tenth, 6 to 5 Robinsons Speed ♦ Proves Big Asset Scores Winning Run After Drawing Pass; Addis Comes Through With Pinch Homer By NORMAN MILLER United Press Sports WriterJ BROOKLYN, N. Y., June 18.— Some fleet base running by Jackie Robinson set up Gil Hodges game -winning outfield fly in the last half of the tenth inning and gave the Brooklyn Dodgers a 6-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs today in a battle of extra base hits. With the score tied, Robnison opened the tenth by drawing a base on balls from veteran Dutch Leonard, who had entered the game in the last of the ninth and put down a Dodger uprising. Robinson promptly .stole second. Leonard slipped over a third called strike to Roy Campanella, but the Cub catcher, Toby Atwell, dropped the ball and then threw too late in an attempt to nail the flying Robinson at third base. Campanella made first safely on the error. After Carl Furillo struck out, Duke Snider was walked intentionally to load the bases. Hodge then hit a low line drive to Hank Sauer in left field and Robinsc/n raced home with the winning run. Twelve Hits for Extra Bases Of the 18 hits in the game, 12 of them were for extra bases, including five home runs. The Dodgers apparently had the game won on Sniders two-run homer in the seventh, but the Cubs went ahead 5-4 in the ninth on a pinch homer by Bob Addis with two men on base. The Dodgers battled back in their half of the ninth and tied the game once again on back-to-back doubles by Furillo and Snider. Furillo s hit drove out starter Bob Rush and brought in the 42-year-old Leonard. After a sacrifice moved Snider to third, Leonard purposely filled the bases on walks to Andy Pafko and George Shuba. Leonard got out of the hole, however, by j | striking out Bobby Morgan and getting Pee j Wee Reese on an infield force play. | Hal Jeffcoat and Sauer hit homers for the Cubs in addition to Addis, while Morgan also homered for the Dodgers. Morgans homer in the first inning offset Jeffcoats. Sauer, who had gone 0-for-24 before todays game, hit his homer in the third to give the Cubs a temporary lead. However, the Dodgers tied it at 2-2 in the fourth on Robinsons single and a hit-and-run double by Campanella. Tommy Holmes, fired May 31 as manager of the Braves, made his first pinch-hitting appearance in a Dodger uniform and grounded out to Rush in the third.
