-♦ ♦ j I i • Only Five to Seek Amagansett Hurdle Small Field Attributed to Belmont Fire; Salemaker, Clive of India to Clash AQUEDUCT, L. I.. N. Y., June 18.— The Amagansett Hurdle Handicap is the top line attraction for tomorrows program at this Rockaway Boulevard course. The event with an added value of ,500 for three-year-olds and over attracted a field of five starters. The paucity in numbers can be laid at the door of the fire which destroyed 22 steeplechasers at Belmont Park on Monday morning and the exodus of fencers to Delaware Park. Three potentials racing secretary Jack Cooper had counted upon for this event, Syracuse Lad, Epero.i and Quiet, are in the green pastures of Valhalla. Of the five named overnight, Clive of India, carrying the orange and white silks of Mrs. Esther duPont Weir, is the top weight. He will have jockey Pat Smithwick in the irons as the heaviest share of the 147 pounds allotted. Next to him in poundage is Hyvania with 146 and Albert Foot. Allflor, Salemaker and Fonda round out the field. The Amagansett is the fifth race of the day and unless a change in weather conditions is encountered they will measure strides and leap the hurdles over a hard track. Salemaker looms as the pre-race choice, he was an odds-on choice in his last start and finished second to the ill-fated Eperon with six pounds more than he will t carry tomorrow. Young Evan Jackson, hav- , ing completed a 10-day suspension for I rough riding, will ride Allison Sterns six-year-old. i Raced Well at Belmont Park v Clive of India is a comparatively green hurdler, but won his debut over hedges at Belmont Park and came back with a "big" race last week to win the New York Turf Writers Cup under four pounds less weight than he gets here. Hyvania, who races for Mrs. G. H. Bostwick, finished fourth in that event, which was his first start over hurdles this year and only his second appearance under silks. He benefits by a five-pound shift in weights and will have the J services of Albert Foot. Allflor, who races I r for Main Earth Stable, won a series of r minor hurdle races, then finished far up , c the track in the turf writers cup, which 1 was a very fast race. Fonda, never a top E horse, has showed less this year than in F past seasons. * The best of tomorrows flat races is the d six 1 furlong Air flame Purse which will be the sixth event. Eight have been named t for this dash, including the speedy E. M. ° OBrien entry of Bank Account and Miss * Degree and such nimble sprinters as Man- * dingo, Mighty Quest, Sagittarius, Streak- * ing. Coveted and Homely Duke. Mandingo, who races for Mrs. H. P. Christiansen, is a not exactly a sprinter, but has turned in r some excellent front-running races over a v distance of ground and will be making his 1 seasonal bow. While he is eligible to the C Edgemere Cap on Saturday, his first 1 major objective will probably be the 0,- h 000 Brooklyn on July 12. g e
