SWEENEY GRANT Staff Correspondents AK-SAR-BEN, Omaha, Nebr., June 18.— ! Eight better-than-average intermediate distance performers were named to match strides in the Sundowner Purse, feature event on tomorrows twilight program at this course. Under the claiming conditions of the mile and 70 yards essay, top weight honors fall to Alice Likins Flying Vale, who is asked to shoulder 122 pounds. How-j ever, the role of favorite most likely will; be accorded Williams S. Clines Catters| Oats, who has been assessed 118 pounds.; Comprising the remainder of the group! are James Herndons Miss Fenelon. Marion Petschs Hand Salute, G. J. Shimas Andy1 Display, Mitchell and McMillans Hum-! phrey, R. H. Specks Carlas Pride, and R. J. and O. H. Oakleys Fair ODoon. Carters Oats previously has shown his versatility by registering victories here in both sprint and distance races. The Cline racer possesses excellent stretch-running ability and has one burst of speed that he can utilize at any time. John Mack Brooks, who is waging a heated battle with Sonny Ray Williams for local riding honors will be astride Carters Oats and this combina-0 tion is almost certain to command most support in the wagering. Hand Salute has accounted for one purse during the current session and in several efforts has acquitted herself well. She appears favorably weighted under a modest 112-pound burden including the usual allowance for ap- prentice Vernon Smith. Beaten Two Noses in Recent Roce Andy Display was beaten the narrowest of margins by De Ville and Sea Phantom in the recent edition of the Lamp Lighter Purse. Andy Display was only a scant two noses to the rear of the leaders at the end of the mile and 70 yards of that event and he most likely would have been the winner had he received smooth sailing during the late stages of the issue. Sea Phantom displayed a tendency to drift out slightly during the stretch run and as a restul interfered with Andy Display. Flying Vale was an additional one and one-half lengths removed in that same race in which he raced well during the stretch run. Flying Vale scored impressively in his second to last start, but this victory was achieved at the expense of less formidable rivals than he will be asked to race tomorrow. Humphrey was among the "also rans" in the Lamp Lighter. He has the necessary early speed to cope with tomorrows oppo- nents, but his stamina over a distance of ground has always been questioned. With- out doubt he is a better sprinter than intermediate distance runner. Fair ODoon has shown only a minimum of ability since arriving here from the West Coast and it doubtful if he will be able to score his first success of the meet in the Sundowner. Miss Fenelon will benefit by the possible "off" strip which may prevail tomorrow. She is a hard runner and on occasion has been known to upset calculations when apparently overmatched. Carlas Pride was trounced soundly by Hand Salute in their last meeting. The Speck colorbearer was sixth, beaten approximately 10 lengths by the winner. Previous to that Carlas Pride turned in a good effort while finishing second to the well-regarded Clara D.
