Akers Recalls Early Career RIVER DOWNS, California, Ohio, June 18. — Riders here today were treated to a few words of advice by Charlie Akers, who rode his first victory in 1883 at Carthage Fair Grounds, near Cincinnati, and had a career which spanned over 50 years and included saddle battles with Isaac Murphy, Jim Fitzsimmons and Jimmy Wingfield at the old Latonia track. Akers admits to 75 years, but has the steadiness of hand and sharpness of eye that made him the toast of riding colonies from Ontario to Texas. Charlie plans to attend the upstate Saratoga meeting and renew old acquaintances with the Belair trainer whom he regards as a "nice youngster."
