! J j i 1 j Nearulas Guineas Triumph Makes Him Derby Favorite NEWMARKET, Eng.. April 30.— Nearula. a big bay colt owned by-William Humble, won the Two-Thousand Guineas — the first of Britains five classic horse races — by four lengths Tuesday and automatically became the favorite for the June 6 running of the English Derby at Epsom Downs. Bebe Grande, a 10 to 1 shot owned by Jack Gerber. and the only filly in. the one mile race, finished second. Oleandrin, a 20 to 1 shot owned by Mrs. Stavros Niar-chos, finished three lengths farther back in third place after leading nearly all the way. Nearula was the 2 to 1 favorite in this prep for the mile and a half Derby. He easily lived up to those odds against 15 other three-year-olds, including the sentimental favorite. Queen Elizabeths Aureole. The young queen watched from the •grandstand as her colt, with Willy Carr wearing the royal purple jacket, made a gallant bid. Aureole sprinted up to press the leaders at the halfway mark but tired and wound up fifth. Nearula proved he has lost none of the speed that made him- Britains top two-year-old last season. When Australian jockey Ed Britt turned him loose about 200 yards from the finish line, Nearula burst to the front and carried Humbles light blue and gold colors to one of the easiest triumphs posted in the race in recent years. The time was a good 1 : 38 flat over a fast track.
