Nirgal Lad Turns Tables On Arthur S. at Suffolk Sears Runner Comes Within Fifth Second of Record in His Triumph By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., April 30.— T. A. Sears Nirgal Lad skipped the half mile featured Juvenile Purse in •471 5 here today and that was good enough to turn the tables on Irving Gushens Arthur S. by a half length. The fleet son of Nirgal — Fantomas completed his dash one-fifth of a second off the track record established two years ago by Box Trade. V. Posners Swift Steve was a fast closing third in the field of eight, missing the top honors by a length. Ridden capably by Keith Stuart. Nirgal Lad was the fourth winning favorite of the afternoon and rewarded his backers S4.80. It was the second victory in three outings for the bay colt, his loss coming here last week when Arthur S. gained a head decision. A chilled east wind made it very uncomfortable for the 12,982 patrons. They received some solace, however, with form-ful racing through the early events. Jockey Dick McLaughlin, who is rapidly gaining recognition as the chief rival of Tony DeSpirito in this sector, passed his idle neighbor by scoring a double in the first and third races. With DeSpirito hailing from Lawrence, Mass., McLaughlin resides in his native Haverhill, an adjoining city.
