Nominations for Eleven Delaware Stakes Close ! Today Also Deadline for Entries For 54 Leonard Richards, Oaks WILMINGTON, Del., April 30.— At mid- | night tomorrow, May 1, nominations will close for 11 of Delaware Parks 14 stakes to be run at the 32-day meeting which opens May 29 and continues through July 4. This also is the deadline for nominations to the 1954 renewals of the tracks two early-closing stakes for three-year-olds, the Leonard Richards and the Delaware Oaks, the latter fixture restricted to fillies. Racing secretary J. Gilbert Haus again reminds horsemen that the closing date for the 1954 Richards and Oaks is May 1, a change from past years. Formerly, the closing date for these specials was mid-July of the year preceding the running. The 1953 stakes already closed are the Richards, Oaks and Spring Maiden Steeplechase. Both the Richards and the Oaks this year figure to gross at least 40,000, of which 0,000 is added money. Each season the added money for these two stakes is increased by ,500. This years Oaks will be run Memorial Day, May 30, and the Richards, June 20. Their distance is a mile and a furlong. Delaware Parks 1953 stakes program — which tops any of the past — includes 10 events on the flat and four steeplechases, with total added money of 05,000, an increase of 5,000 over 1952. The climax will come on closing day, July 4, when the 00,000 added, mile and a quarter New Castle Handicap — doubled in purse value this season to make it the worlds richest race for fillies and mares — is renewed. The 11 1953 stakes for which nominations close tonight, with date of their running and added money, are: Wilmington Handicap, May 29, 0,000; Dover Stakes, June 3, 0,000; Brandywine Handicap, June 6, 0,000; Polly Drummond Stakes, June 10, 0,000; Kent Stakes, June 13, 5,000; Tom Roby Steeplechase, June 22, 0,000; Christiana Stakes, June 24, 0,000; Georgetown Steeplechase Handicap, June 26, 0,000; Sussex Handicap, June 27, 5,000; Indian River Steeplechase Handicap, July 3, 0,000, and New Castle Handicap, July 4, 00,000.
