Wheeling Downs Opens Spring Meeting Today Featured Maytime Handicap Will Be Run in Two Divisions By PAT CAUDILL Staff Correspondent WHEELING DOWNS, Wheeling, W. Va., April 30. — This beautiful half-mile oval will open its spring meeting tomorrow with the presentation of an eight-race program. Only finishing touches need to be applied j | to have the plant in topnotch condition. This meeting will continue through Me- i I morial Day on May 30 presenting racing daily except Sunday, a total of 26 racing days. The summer meeting opening July i 18 through September 26 will offer 61 days of racing and the fall meeting of 21 days from November 4 through November 28 will make a total of 108 days of racing during this year. Racing secretary Charles F. Henry received sufficient entries to warrant the Maytime Handicap being divided. Designed for three-year-olds at the distance of five furlongs for a purse of ,500, seven starters have been named to face starter Carl Burns for each of the dashes. The fifth race, the first division of the Maytime, will bring together G. R. Whites Lucky William, a winner of two events this year at Oaklawn Park and this three-year-old will share top weight of 109 pounds with two others, the Paducah .Farms Cunny and Mrs. M. K. Markmans Miss Lovey. R. N. Cunninghams Okefenokee, a winner of a ,000 claiming event at Charles Town on March 4 is weighted at 107 pounds and is to be ridden by jockey Sal Chiapetta. Others entered in this division are the Merrifield Farms Ante-Freeze and Colonel Plin, owned by Mrs. C. Brown, each with 106 pounds, with G. V. Snyders Midnite Moon entered with the feathery weight of 105 pounds. In .the second division, Dis Pete, a good looking son of Dispose — Victory Wise, owned by T. F. Baus and to be ridden by jockey B. Bauer, has been assigned top weight of 118 pounds. Closely behind him in the weights is Mad John, racing for Mr. and Mrs. C. Rogers, with 118 pounds and jockey R. Bell has been named to handle this sophomore. E. J. Cues Niembro Cue will carry 112 pounds and this racer merits a strong chance to take down top honors. Mrs. C. A. and H. A. Smiths Overweight and E. M. OBriens Santa Do are each weighted at 109 pounds. Completing the field is the Char-Mar Farms Dim Night at 108 pounds and the lightest weight of the group will be E. S. Odeskys Wayward Lass at 106 pounds. Dis Pete was a winner of five events as a two-year-old last year and at the Sunshine Park meeting won two races including the Kissimmee Park Purse and the Fort Pierce Purse, both allowance events. He raced at Wheeling last season and from his recent winning efforts may be the favorite in tomorrows event.
