State Coach in Upset Victory at Fort Miami Buddy Baers Appearance Draws Good Crowd in Rainy Weather By R. £. HURLEY Staff Correspondent FORT MIAMI, Maumee, Ohio, April 30. —Attracted partially by the stage personality of Buddy Baer, who was to present a trophy to the winner of the feature race, named in his honor, 1,774 horse racing fans turned out in rainy weather for the days sport here today. They were rewarded by a pleasing break in the weather when it cleared after the third race and the equally pleasant flow of winning favorites held up with the choices winning two of the first five races. State Coach, aided by a very heavy ride by veteran Buddy Mills, gained his second straight triumph in the fifth race when he downed the favored Heathers View by a length and a half. Mills elected to drop to |fc the inside with State Coach and the geld-pr ing benefited greatly as the front-running Redisco ran out on the turn. State Coach gained sufficient margin to hold off the late charge of Heathers View, who is an older full brother to Uncle Miltie. State Coach was overlooked in the wagering and paid 7.40 for his second consecutive win. In direct contrast to yesterdays program, when a long shot won the first race and the Daily Double paid 75.20, the odds-on choice, Your Sun, won the first race at one to two and started a Double which was completed by Grain Market in the second event, paying 6.20, smallest of the first 11 days of racing. Victory for Your Sun was sweet, for the eight-year-old gelding had finished first last week only to be disqualified for interference. The gelding was competently handled by Howard Craig. Craig rode the favored Tarpan in the second race, but the gallant gelding, who has won some of Americas top sprinting laurels, broke down at the furlong pole and probably has run in his last race. Grain Market was one length clear at the finish and paid 3.60. r • :: - • • i
