April 30. — Thirteen of the nations outstanding three-year-olds are expected today to be named for the 79th running of the world famed Kentucky Derby at this historic course Saturday. And in the minds of most of the crowd of about 100,000 who will attend this "Run for the Roses," it is a question of Native Dancer against the field. The magnificent gray Sagamoreans record of 11 successes in as many startM and his splendid public trial here yesterdaH will send him to the post a very pronounceB choice. This despite the presence of MriB Gordon Guibersons improving CorresponH ent, who won the Blue Grass Stakes n track record time and will be ridden by jockey Eddie Arcaro, pilot of five past Derby winners. And such factors as Harry Guggenheims Dark Star, who won the Derby Trial in a lively 1:36; Eugene Con-stantins stretch-running Chesapeake winner, Royal Bay Gem; Greentrees Flamingo winner, Straight Face; the Florida Derby winner, Money Broker, and other accomplished rivals. Social Outcast, who accompanied Native Dancer here as "a substitute we hope not to need," became a more or less definite starter when jockey Johnny Adams, currently at the top of his form, was engaged for him. There is a possibility also that Mrs. E. E. Dale Shaffers Hit the Spot will turn up in the entries, though he was very thoroughly beaten in the Trial, and his status is very doubtful. Also doubtful is Mrs. Rices Washington Park Futurity winner, Mr. Paradise. And none of the connections of the 124 other three-year-olds made eligible as recently as February 15 is at all encouraged to post the 50 to pass the entry box and 50 additional to start. Meanwhile, the Derby crowds are thronging into this sedate old city on the banks of the Ohio, and Downs presideu Bill Corum is preparing for the largest at md-ance ever to witness a horse race on this Continued on Page Forty-Four -~j Cerise Reine Tops Field Of Fourteen in Ky. She defeated Arab Actree, lippy, Rica Rosie and Happy Queen in the seven furlongs Lanark Purse at the local course and, previous to that conquest, captured the Threave Main and the Forest Retreat Purses at Keeneland j The Cain Hoy star will be guided in the Oaks by Henry Moreno, who has displayed excellent saddle ability thus far in the Kentucky spring season. While Cerise Reine, Bubbley and Wings o Morn appear to hold the edge in the Oaks, several others in the overnight field would be quite dangerous if anyone of them comes up with a "big race." Mr. and Mrs. James R. Collins Biddy Jane, a good stakes filly in 1952 and a visitor to the Hialeah winners circle this year, holds a royal chance in the Oaks and she is to have the saddle services of Johnny Adams. Biddy Jane gets in the allowance stake with 116 pounds and her recent morning trials have been on the quick side. Mrs. H. J. Damns Arab Actress, Fairway Farms Good Call, W. Arnold Hangers Rica Risoe. Warner L. Jones, Jrs, Happy Queen, and J. Barry Ryans Slippy, all came up to the Oaks in good condition and 1 each will take up 116 pounds. Daniels Jet Ace, Edward Axtons Gray Challenge and the fleet Pollard and Harkins representative, Our Challenge, probably will receive the major share of support over Gay Hunter.
