Yankees Deal White Sox 6-1 Defeat Rookie Bill Renna Paces New Yorkers Whitey Ford Goes Distance For First Win of Season; Richards, Minoso Ejected By the United Press Rookie Bill Renna slugged a home, a triple and a single in his first major league start yesterday to drive home two runs and give returned Korea veteran Whitey Ford a 6-1 victory for the New York Yankees over the Chicago White Sox before 7,656 fans. ! Renna, who appeared in four games ear- I lier, struck out in his first appearance today. They he fired a home run in the fourth inning to score the Yankees second run, and in the sixth inning singled to score Hank Bauer, who had doubled, with the third New York tally. In the ninth he tripled and scored himself on Joe Collins single. Mickey Mantle also contributed a four-bagger for the Yankees, his fourth of the year, but it was a home run because of interference, called by umpire Jim Duffy, and it led to the ejection of White Sox manager Paul Richards from the game. The ball hit the wall in left center field and after Mantle had pulled up at second base, Duffy waved him home. Richards jostled the umpire severely before he was ejected. Sox left fielder Minnie Minoso also was put out of the game in the fourth inning by Duffy when he protested a decision that he was out on a relay to second base from the outfield. Ford Fans Four Ford went the distance for the Yankees to post his first victory of the year in his second start. He allowed eight hits, struck out four, and walked two. Gene Bearden worked seven innings for the White Sox and was charged with the first three Yankee runs before he was relieved for a pinch hitter. Harry Dorish finished the game and gave up a final three runs on three hits in the ninth inning. It was Beardens first defeat against one win. The final Yankee runs came in the ninth. After Collins singled Renna home, Yogi Berra walked. Gil McDougald popped out, Collins singled, Ford walked and Phil Rizzuto singled in the last two markers. The White Sox had their first scoring I chance in the fifth inning when they tallied their only run. Vern Stephens led off with a double and scored on Chico Car-rasquels single. Carrasquel reached second and Sherm Lollar was safe at first when Rizzuto booted Lollar s ground ball. Then the bases were filled with no outs as Bearden sacrificed and was safe at first when Ford threw to third base too late to catch Car-rasQuel. But Ford stiffened and after Nellie Fox had fouled out, he struck out Ferris Fain . and Tom Wright to end the inning. It was the Yankees 11th win against three defeats this year and left the defending champions 1% games ahead of second-place Cleveland and three games ahead of the third place White Sox.
