j | i I i Briarwood Purse Brings Out Nine Entry of High Bracket and Guard of Honor May Rule Slight Choice Over Begorra JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., April 30— Nine familiar middle-distance horses meet at Jamaica tomorrow in the featured Briar-wood Purse, a ,000 allowance event at a mile and a sixteenth. The field includes two sets of couplings, Count Turf and Mr. Turf, owned by Jack Amiel, while Eddie I Holton will saddle High Bracket and Guard of Honor for Abe Levinson and Floyd H. I Stark, respectively. Frank C. Rand, Jr.s, Begorra. King Ranchs Risque Rouge, Woolford Farms Active Duty, J. B. Wards j i Deluge and Lazy F Ranchs Put Out complete the field. The Holton-trained entry of High Bracket and Guard of Honor may be slightly favored over Begorra in what shapes up as a wide-open race. High Bracket comes from an easy victory at six furlongs in a 2,500 claiming event, but has often raced creditably at tomorows distance and in similar company. Guard of Honor, who is not overly endowed with courage, finished a respectable fourth in an allowance sprint won by the surprising Stella Aurata last week. The apprentice I allowance has been claimed for both of j these horses, with Willie Lester named for j High Bracket, but also engaged for Active Duty. With the "bugs" they get in under 108 pounds, the lightweights of the field. Gorman to Ride Begorra Begorra, who will be ridden by Dave Gorman at 113 pounds, or as close to it as he can malt, which is probably 115, turned in a sharp race on Tuesday for his seasonal debut, closing with a belated rush to be third behind Thymus and Raes Reward at six furlongs. Risque Rouge and Count Turf finished behind the former Green tree Stable four-year-old in that race and were also making their first starts of the meeting after long absences. Begorra proved a con-. sistent racer under Charley Reynolds direction last fall. Risque Rouge, who had been training steadily, but not sensationally, tired as though in need of a race, while Count Turf, who had trained sensationally, showed no speed whatever. The 1951 Kentucky Derby winner could improve considerably if he would consent to race to his recent morning trials, but is penalized with 122 pounds. Mr. Turf showed a flash of early speed in his only start of the meeting almost three weeks ago, but stopped badly and finished last in a dash won by Sagittarius. Active Duty quit in a test at tomorrows distance won by Sufie last Saturday, but won his previous start, which was also at a mile and a sixteenth. The final times of the two races were an identical 1:454s, while Active Duty set a faster early pace in his winning race than he encountered when soundly beaten. Deluge, who will be ridden by Hedley Woodhouse at 113 pounds, will probably receive considerable support. After finishing a close second to Knowitall in a sprint, while carrying an ,000 claiming tag, he came back to finish third to Swoop and Kiss Me Kate in a swiftly run mile and a sixteenth.
