UNITED PRESS 1 NEWS BRIEFS Baruch Citizen of Year PHILADELPHIA, Pa., May 18.— Elder statesman Bernard M. Baruch was named the American Citizen of the Year today by the American Citizen Award Committee of the Junior Order, United American Mechanics. The award will be presented on June 17 when the organization closes a four-day Centennial celebration here. The non-sectarian patriotic fraternity was founded in 1953 to "preserve American ideals." Pilots Shoot Down 12 MIGs SEOUL, Korea, May 18. — Sabre Jet pilots shot down 12 MIG-15s today, with Capt. Joseph McConnell bagging three to run his "kill" to 16 and make him undisputed king of the Korean skies. Ridgwoy Says Allies Lack Material WASHINGTON, D. C, May 18.— Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway told Congress today the allies in Europe are "still gravely short of airpower" and have "major deficiencies" in supplies and ammunition. The Supreme Allied Commander in Europe appeared before the House Foreign Affairs Committee to bolster the administrations plea for ,800,000,000 in foreign aid. Ready "Freedom Plane" Return BERLIN, Germany, May 18. — The United States prepared today to return to the Czech Communists the "freedom plane" on which a group of anti-Red Czechoslovak citizens flew through the Iron Curtain to freedom on March 23. William Otis Arrives in New York NEW YORK, N. Y., May 18.— Newsman William Oatis, who spent 22 months in a prison behind the Iron Curtain, flew home today to a reunion with the bride he has not seen for nearly three years. Oatis, who was released from Pankrak prison in Prague after the dark-haired wife had written a personal appeal to the President of Czechoslovakia, arrived at New York International Airport on a Pan-American flight from Frankfurt, where he was taken after his release Saturday. Consult on Truce Talks LONDON, England, May 18.— Prime Minister Winston Churchill said today that there is constant consultation between the United States and British governments on Korean truce talks and that he believes the United States is paying attention to Britains views. Gardner Nominated for Cuban Post WASHINGTON, D. C, May 18.— President Eisenhower today nominated Arthur Gardner, 64, Detroit banker and manufacturer, to be ambassador to Cuba. Ma. Salem Asks American Aid CAIRO, Egypt, May 18.— Maj. Salah Salem, a member of Premier Mohammed Naguibs ruling military group, appealed today for American help in settling the Anglo-Egyptian dispute over the Suez Canal Zone.
