: 1 Alis Gem Gains Stature Through Hollywood Win Shoemaker on Breeders Cap Victor as 45,000 See First Card HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calif., May 18. — Alis Gem, owned by the WL Ranch of Harry M. Warner, today enjoyed new stature among the Wests three-year-olds as a result of his smashing victory in the Golden State Breeders Handicap here last Saturday. The son of Alibhai and Bev, who was making only the ninth start of his career, now looms as one of the early choices for such mid-summer sophomore specials as the Cinema Handicap and the 0,000 Westerner. The program featured by the Breeders Handicap launched what may be the most successful meeting ever conducted at Hollywood Park. The opening, delayed four days by a boycott of the HBPA over a purse dispute with the track management, was attended by close to 45,000 patrons who wagered just a few dollars short of two and a half million dollars. Alis Gem, winner now of each of his only three engagements this year, beat a field of older horses in the Breeders Handicap. Faultlessly ridden by Willie Shoemaker, who had three other winners during the afternoon, the Warner colt ran the mile and a sixteenth under his 108-pounds impost in 1:42% and beat Boomerang Boy a neck. Following in their wake were Horsetrader-Ed, Witch-English, Stranglehold and Gesticulator.
