Miss Joanne Turns Back Five Suffolk Downs Foes Grieve Filly Under Stout Drive After Passing Favored Epic King By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 18. — Jim Grieves Miss Joanne, winner of an overnight handicap in her last outing here at Suffolk Downs, took the measure of five rival sophomores in the featured Copley Purse today. Smartly handled by Dick McLaughlin* currently leading the local reins-men, the Challenge Me filly came to the end of the mile and a sixteenth a half length driving victor over Mrs. J. H. Woodstocks Epic King. Another half length back of the pair, W. L. Curies Little Lucky had no trouble saving the minor award over Jim Beatties Time for Speed. While the sun shone bright here this afternoon, the muddy condition of the track, left by the steady rains in New England since Sunday, was cause for numerous scratches during the day. In the feature, Africance was declared, reducing the field to six. Whe n the sextet were dispatched from barrier it was evident that none of the riders had any ideas of trying to steal the race. Once straightened away for the run down the backstretch, Epic King was in command, about three lengths before Ar-tane, the only member of the line-up not under stout restraint. Miss Joanne was in third position and running kindly as Time for Speed replaced the tiring Artane leaving the backstretch. Epic King was still in hand as he skirted the corners from out of the backstretch, but before Zehr had the Kings Blue gelding straightened for the run to the wire, McLaughlin let out a notch on the ultimate winner. She quickly obliged by zooming into command leaving the furlong pole and it was ding dong from that point to the end. Little Lucky was the only other member of the field withi nstriking distance and just when it appeared he was to run down the dueling leaders, he appeared to hang. Miss Joanne was installed second choice to the odds-on Epic King and paid a tidy .20. She was timed in 1:46% over the strip termed muddy. The victory gave McLaughlin his second win of the afternoon, having scored with Desert Witch in the third race. 1
