Thornburg Astride Four Winners at Ascot Park First Such Feat of Current Meet; On Best Trick in Feature Event By RONALD KRANCER Staff Correspondent ASCOT PARK, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, May 18. — Jockey Buck Thornburg was the riding star of the afternoon when he piloted four winners home first. It is the first such performance of the meetin. His winning mounts were Guienette, Believe in Me, Chesters Girl, and Best Trick. Best Trick was the fourth winning favorite of the day, through the sixth race and paid .60 in defeating Sospiro by a half length at the end of seven furlongs. Time of the race was l:34Vs over a sloppy track. Chaldson was third in the race another four lengths in the van. Best trick was first out of the gate when the field was dispatched by Eddie Anthony. On the clubhouse turn she had gained a two-length margin while saving ground. In closest pursuit were Chaldson and Spode. She continued saving ground while on the backstretch with her lead having dwindled by a half length with Chaldson still in the runner-up spot and Sospiro fifth, four and a half lengths farther back. On the far turn, Sospiro, ridden by jockey Barnes, started to move up and at the furlong marker was second a length and a half in back of the pacesetter. In the late stretch, Sospiro loomed dangerously while making up ground, but Best Trick had a little too much left and continued on gamely. It was the second winning race of the meeting for the eight-year-old daughter of Grand Slam who was bred by the Coral Gables sportsman, Fred Hooper. Thornburg is 21 years of age, was born in Muncie, Ind., but now makes California his home. Last season, Thornburg won only 23 races, is now well on his way to his best season. Counter Plot, ridden by Gardner Darlington, scored a three-qaurters length verdict over Grey Bill in the fifth race. The winner was a slight favorite over the runner-up and returned his backers .60 after running the six ond one-half furlongs in 1:25. 1 The winner had a two-length advantage as late as the turn for home, but in the final furlong, while in along the rail, tired badly and Grey Bill, on the outside made up some ground. Conuter Part was making his second start of the season and was scoring his first victory. The seven-year-old Chance Shot gelding was bred by the Elmendorf Farm and last year was running for a ,000 price tag at Pimlico.
