_ _ 4 Give Steadying Impost of 130 To Tom Fool for Metropolitan j Royal Vale With 127, Intent* Under 125 Weighted Closest To Greentrees Fine Racer BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 18. — Greentree Stables Tom Fool has been assigned the steadying topweight of 130 pounds for Saturdays 0,000 Metropolitan Handicap, having the same burden in this mile that he is to carry in tomorrows six-furlong Joe H. Palmer Handicap. The big son of Menow is expected to pick up the burden, though it is more than any horse has carried successfully in the Metropolitan since Greentrees Devil Diver won under 134 pounds in 1944. That was the second of three straight victories for Devil Diver, who scored under 117 in 1943 and with 129 in 1945. The only other Metropolitan winners to carry as much as 130 pounds were Grey Lag, 133 pounds in 1923, and Eight Thirty, 132 in 1941. Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs Royal Vale, winner of four stakes this year and recent victor in the Dixie Handicap, is second highweight in the "Met" with 127 pounds. This is 12 pounds more than he carried in the Gallant Fox on May 2 and seven more than his Dixie package. The English horse is improving with every start, but it is a question if he can continue to keep pace with the handicappers. Brookfield Farms Intent, who won the San Juan Capistrano Handicap last out and worked a clever mile this morning, is next in the Metropolitan imposts with 125 pounds, while C. V. Whitneys Cold Command, who chased Royal Vale in the Gallant Fox and Dixie has been given 117. Other Possibilities for Race Other possibilities include Mrs. Samuel Pistorios Tuscany, who has never been asked to go more than six furlongs, 114; Belair Studs Golden Gloves, winner of Saturdays Valley Forge Handicap at Garden State, 113; Mrs. Ben F. Whitakers Hitex, a recent Belmont winner, also 113; C. T. Chenerys Bryan G., Ill, and Joe W. Browns Parading Lady, 110. The weights scale down to 95 pounds on King Ranchs Beyler Bey, a three-year-old who won his last start in 1952, but has not been seen this year. There were an unusual number of declarations among the 46 originally named for the Metropolitan, those withdrawn before the publication of the weights being: Crafty Admiral, One Hitter, Mandingo, Sunglow, First Glance, Diamond Jimmy, Dulat, Sky Ship, Tenedos, Quiet Step and Orsini, most of them casualties of one sort or another.
