Marks Sixth Score In Last Seven Races Walmac Homebred Runs Six Furlongs in 1 :10 to Down - Recover at Arlington Park By J. J. MURPHY ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June 29. Gala Fete, a Walmac Farm filly who always runs a good race did not disappoint her many backers here this afternoon. The four-year-old daughter of Heliopolis was installed a short-priced favorite and came romping home victorious by three parts of a length to run six furlongs in 1 : 10. Gala Fete has now won six of her last seven starts, her only defeat coming here last week when she was trimmed by Bella Figura, a well-backed favorite. Doug Dodson rode Gala Fete today and she paid .60. Runner-up to the winner was Recover, a miss who was of stakes caliber as a two-year-old but seemed to slip last year when she took but one purse in nine starts. Recover ran a good race under the steering of Ray Zanelli, a new jockey in this territory. In fact, had she come to the outside of Gala, Fete sooner, she could have made things mighty interesting for the latter. As it was, she finished well in advance of Jo Pilot, and the latter, in turn, beat Jacodema, Dixie Flyer, and Bloom, who finished in that order. Triple for Brooks The race in which the sextet of fillies and mares tangled was known as the Marica, after a great race mare of yesteryear, and the early pace was made by Jo Pilot, with Recover racing second and Gala Fete third. Nearing the stretch turn, Gala Fete took over to open up a three-length lead, and as her winning margin was much shorter the difference in lengths is evidence of what a good race Recover really ran. It was a beautiful day for racing, with the thermometer hunching over the 80 mark, and a crowd of 14,534 turned out. Jockey Steve Brooks, who took a trip to Hollywood Park over the week-end, returned full of vim and vigor and rode three of the first five winners. Brooks got going at once with Criteria, an outsider, in the first race, then steered Bless America, the favorite, to success in the third, and came back to take the fifth with First Refusal. It was the biggest day the veteran had enjoyed in some time. First Refusal, representing J. J. Gregory, who claimed him for ,000 last time out, was running for an 1,000 claiming price, and tow-roped a good field, in which Futu-ramatic, who took second money, was the favorite. Brooks was required to do some "horse-backing," however, to land Criteria home in the first race. The filly, trying for her second straight success, had to come around three horses in the stretch, but she accomplished the feat nobly to win over Neros Mermaid. A 15.00 Daily Double resulted when Hoop Mood, a two-year-old filly owned by Fred Hooper, took the second. The daughter of Hoop, Jr., who made her very first start the other day, when she finished fourth, was under the guidance of jockey Don Scurlock and was in front throughout. The distance was five furlongs, and Natchez Girl, the favorite, was unplaced. Bless America, an odds-on choice in the third, chased Push Pin until well into the stretch, then took over to win going away.
