4 Snead, Middlecoff Favored In PGA Starting Tomorrow BIRMINGHAM, Mich., June 29 UP. Slammin Sammy Snead and Cary Middlecloff were installed tonight as co-favorites in the thirty-fifth PGA Golf Championship, while defending: champion Jim Turnesa decried his own chances because "Ive been falling asleep." A field of 145 will tee off Wednesday in the first of two 18-hole qualifying rounds, after which the low 63 and Turnesa will begin five days of match play over tightly-trapped Birmingham Country Club" before the winner is crowned July 7. Only a few of the name pros were on hand today and the list of favorites was narrowed with the withdrawal of Jackie Burke, Jimmy Demaret and former champion Denny Shute. Burke, who wolud have been one of the top choices, pulled out because of a virus condition. With Ben Hogan and Lloyd Man-gram in England to compete in the British Open, most of those on hand conceded that Snead and Middlecoff were the men to beat but felt that almost anybody might do just that.
