Riyer Downs Meeting j Reaches Half-Way Mark Tote Figures Up 12 Pet. Over 52; Eleven Go in Todays Main Event RIVER DOWNS, California, Ohio, June 29. River Downs reaches the halfway mark of its annual 44-day meeting on Tuesday with the meeting a success percentagewise for the opening half. Attendance and mutuel play are both up with the "tote" figures approximately 12 per cent ahead of last season. Better racing is scheduled for the concluding 22 days with the ,000 Cincinnati Special scheduled for this Saturday, July 4, the 0,000 Marathon on July 8 and the 5,000 River Downs Championship on July 25. Tuesdays mid-meeting card is filled with claiming races and the feature is a ,500-,000 top and bottom sprint, "which has drawn 11 aspirants of humdrum abilities. The race honors the Cedar Hills Farms and will pit D. Shades Bit o Prose against a jumbled band of routers and sprinters in a puzzling line-up. Kenwood, Duskys First, Mad Saint and Rita Dugan are avowed routers who are in the line-up with little, sprinting ability, yet their presence throws the race out of perspective. Bit o Prose has been sprinting all season against good, company, such as Candidate and Ferol S., and has one victory to her credit. The daughter of The Rhymer Magic Charm has always shown a steady effort which should make her most dangerous in the Cedar Hills. The opponents are Good Luck Stables Cockofthewalk and E. Davis Chippewa Chief, who have also been sprinting at the Downs during the first 22 days of the meeting. Cockofthewalk came from Chicago to win his first local outing at River Downs, then finished a good second in his second start. Gerry Hufnagel will again handle Cockofthewalk. Chippewa Chief will have leading rider Billy Sackett in the irons, which is almost reason enough for serious consideration. Chippewa Chief has been liked by his connections in both local outings but needed his last races to reach racing tfghtness. The Davis racer will be a strong factor on Tuesday. Sweeping Jo, Instruction, Sweep Tiger and Boy Blue fill the field of the Cedar Hills and not one of this quartet is completely outgunned in the feature.
