R. Carter Drowns Attempting To Swim Kentucky River LEXINGTON, Ky., June 29. Robert Carter, 16, who was being groomed to become a jockey drowned Sunday while attempting to swim the Kentucky River near Lawrenceburg. Carter, under contract to Arthur B. Hancock of Claiborne, and under the tutelage of John Ward, had not ridden in a race but Ward stated that he had shown extrordinary promise and that he had learned more in one year than the average apprentice does in two. He had been getting most of his experience at Keeneland. Carter had been making his residence with his grandmother, Mrs. Annie Carter at Versailles but the body will be sent to his home in Dayton where he is survived by his father, Martin Carter; his mother, Mrs. Mae Speary, a sister and a brother. The body will rest at Duells Funeral Chapel.
