Grubb Guides Padukian To River Downs Triumph Fills In When Rector Cancels Mounts; Atomic Message Scores By R. E. HURLEY Staff Correspondent RIVER DOWNS, California, Ohio, June 29. Jockey Larry Grubb proved an able substitute as he filled in on the two-year-old, Padukian, in the third race of the day and the Bimelech Alondra colt justified the wave of late money which made him favorite by defeating the second choice, Don Buster, by a length and a half. Grubb got the mount when apprentice Joe Rector canceled all his mounts due to the heat, but the five-pound difference in the weights failed to stop Padukian. Grubb had the colt right on the pace all the way and the youngster came around the turn like a veteran, a tribute to his schooling around the banked turns at West Virginia, where he was a previous winner. A last-minute flood of support to Padukian made him favorite over Don Buster, who was not helped much during the running while Padukian was saving all the ground. Padukian equaled the best time for five furlongs as he stepped the distance in 1:00 flat and returned .00 for his victory. A small mishap in the standard totali-sator which delayed the start of the second race approximately 11 minutes failed to ruffle Mr. and Mrs. R. Gabes Atomic Message, who apparently revels in mid-ninety temperature. Atomic Message won his second consecutive purse of the meeting by two and three-quarters lengths on this sultry afternoon under jockey W. D. Lucas. The win was number 20 for Lucas and moved him into a tie with G. Silva for second place in the jockey race. Atomic Message sped the six furlongs in 1:12 and paid .80. Those who had combined Atomic Message with Bold J., winner of the first race, received a pay-off of 0.00 for their keenness. Bold J. earned his first purse of the season in the six-furlong sprint which opened the days racing, and paid .40 as a close second choice in the betting.
